Abilene, Tx.(Feb. 26Th, 2011) Drivers, teams and fans were treated to warm, sunny conditions as day broke for Abilene Speedway’s annual Icebreaker. Several new drivers signed in to try their at qualifying for each of the 20-lap feature events for the IMCA Modifieds, Southern Sportmods, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. Also on the nights racing card were the Street Stocks and Jr. Mini stocks running heats and features.

Wiley White Wins Another One

Keith White(Academy) once again showed he was the force to be reckoned with in the IMCA Modified class this year. Much the same as last night White ran in the top five throughout the early stages of the 20-lap main. White caught early leader John Gober then moved to the high side to get by Gober just past halfway. From there White survived a couple restarts while Gober was fighting to fend off Andy Gage for second. Tyler Iverson recovered from an early trip to the back for fourth, with Gabe Tucker rounding out the top five.

As the green flag flew on the 20-car IMCA Modified main Gober was first into turn 1 followed by Caleb Stone, Fred Wojtek and Jacob Anson. Just as Scotty Brown got by Anson for fourth yellow waved for a spin by Iverson. On the restart Anson was forced to check up in turn 2 collecting Monte Bolton. Once back to green White was pressuring Brown for fourth. Wojtek looked under Stone for second taking the spot on lap 3.

Brown and White closed on Stone with Brown getting third on lap 4 and White going past on lap 5. White and Brown then ran wheel to wheel for third, with White taking the spot on lap 8 as Dillon Smith got around Stone for fifth. White then picked off Wojtek for second leaving him side by side with Brown for third. At the halfway point it was Gober, White, Wojtek, Brown and Smith in the top five.

White kept the heat on Gober until he slipped past on lap 11 for the lead. Mark Patterson made contact with Iverson, who marching forward, with Patterson getting up on two wheels and stopping for a lap 13 caution. On he restart White good a huge jump, while Brown pressured Wojtek. Wojtek would spin and collect Chase Jupe and Stone. On the next restart Gober tried to hang with White while challenged by Gage. As those two battled, White eased away.

In the pack, Pat McGuire was able to get past Danny Hogue for sixth, but gave the spot back a lap later. In the waning laps Gage tried and tried to find a way around Gober getting along side at times. This gave White in the Tracys Auto Sales, Braka Operating, Extreme Graphics, Tony’s Custom Carbs, Craftmasters, Belton Pipe, Kempner Iron & Metal, BSB Manufacturing, Temple Iron & Metal, AMSOil, TCI, Centex Motorsports, Hughes Chassis smooth sailing to checkers. Gober was able to hold off Gage for second.

“I was able to run the top or the bottom,” said White. “It would go through the middle and through the rough stuff. The car was just awesome. We passed them on the top and bottom. I think you could see my grinning through my helmet.”

“When you car you like you become comfortable with it and it’s predictable. I try not not to adjust myself out. The car should be an extension of the driver. You just leave them alone and not change a lot.”

“I’m pretty superstitious about a bunch of stuff, but talking about going three for three isn’t one of them. It doesn’t bother me. We’d like to sweep the weekend and I’d like to win one in the I-stock. I gave hat one away last night.”

Poor Paces Sportmod Scramble

Bradley poor and Doug Easterling battled early in the 20-lap IMCA Southern Sportmod main until Easterling fell out with a flat. Jesse Sobbing, running a Northern Sportmod caught Poor with the two making contact sending Poor around. By track rules, the leader was awarded his spot back, while Sobbing went to the tail. The race ended with some controversy under yellow on the final lap with Poor taking the win.

Poor beat Easterling into turn 1 at the start only to have Easterling go by in turns 3-4. Behind them Brad Shirley spun to bring out a caution and a complete restart. Poor again jumped out front in turn 1, but was overtaken by Easterling at the other end. Poor fell in line second with Gary Fox and TJ Green in tow. Poor looked under Easterling and got along side when Easterling pulled up with a flat giving the lead back to Poor on lap 3.

Sobbing, Todd Bartlett and Ronnie Welborn tried three wide coming out of turn 2 and contact was made sending Bartlett around, and Welborn to the pits with damage. Under caution Bartlett let Sobbing know he wasn’t happy tagging his door and promptly receiving the black flag. On the restart the top four took off leaving Sobbing side by side with Kenneth Graves for fifth. Sobbing then got past Jeff Turner who slowed and pulled off.

Up front Poor was holding a slight advantage as Fox ran side by side with TJ Green for second. TJ Green took the spot with Sobbing now putting the heat on Fox. At th crossed flags it was Poor ,TJ Green, Sobbing, Fox and Matt Mueller in th top five. Sobbing used the top to get along side and by TJ Green on lap 11. Sobbing closed in on Poor for the lead on lap 13.

Sobbing tapped Poor on lap 14 sending him around with several other spinning behind them. Poor retook the point as the top five pulled away on green with Kevin Green getting by Fox for third. Sobbing and Robert Crabtree got in game of tag on the final lap with Sobbing drilling Crabtree in turn 3. With the white already out the race finished under yellow with Poor in the Evan Williams, Coors Light, Braka Operating, Famous Daves, Showtime Signs & Designs, Abilene Powder Coating Clyde Gardner powered, Big Chief Chassis taking the win.

“Being up front is what helped us last night,” replied Poor. “Just trying to stay out of all the rough stuff. The car worked really well. I have a lot of good people putting a lot of effort. I heard about the melee going on behind me, but it was fun. I’ve got a lot confidence in this car and the people that work on it.”

“I really wasn’t that upset when I got spun because I new I’d probably get my spot back. Everyone thought that I’d be mad. I felt like I was probably the fastest one at that point. He may have been faster to catch me, but I knew he wasn’t going be an issue anymore..”

Killen Clips White on Final lap for I-Stock Win

It’s not often Keith White gives someone an opening, but when you get it you’d better grab it. Randy Killen, who lead the majority of the 20-lap feature, gave way to White in his new I-Stock. Killen was able able to sneak by White on a late restart beating White to the checkers by a car length.

It was three wide for the lead as green waved on the 20-car IMCA Stock Car feature. Michael Sheen emerged from that scrap with the lead trailed by William Creese, Jesse Taylor, Billy Wade and Killen. Wade got by both Taylor and Creese for second followed by Killen to third. Shane Priddy and Duain Pritchett got hooked together on lap with David Phillips and Cory Davis getting tangled and other getting a piece of the action.

On the restart Killen got ahead while Wade got loose giving up spots to Taylor and White. Taylor and White then ran door to door for position while Ronny Gould made his way past Wade for fifth. Taylor and White both went by Sheen on lap 7 for second and third. As Taylor and White continued to run side by side, Gould took fourth from Sheen. Coming to halfway with Killen out front, White eased past Taylor, with Gould and Sheen holding the rest of the top five.

Creese spun from a three wide mid-pack battle to bring out a yellow on lap 13. On the restart White looked high on Killen as Gould tried low on White for second. White got by Killen for the lead on lap 16 with Killen and Gould making contact that gave Taylor an opening for third. Gould retook third only to spin in turn 4 to bring out a lap 17 yellow.

Once back to green White, Killen and Taylor broke away with Killen taking a look low on White for the lead back. As the white flag waved Killen again gave White a look low in turn 1, and again in turn 3. White appeared to clip a rut and drift up in turn 4 giving Killen in the Dons Tire& Auto, Bobs Transmissions, Jason’s Tree Service, Mid-States Machine, Terminator Chassis an opening to outrace White to checkers.

“It was just a lot of luck,” replied Killen. “That guy messed up on the last lap. I led it most of the way and let him get around me. I was lucky on that last turn that my car stuck and I was able to get back around him. My mom and dad help me a lot they’re my biggest sponsors.”

“This is the first race of the season and we come down here to race. It’s in our blood, you know. We want to race as soon as we can and can’t wait for winter to get over up there. We don’t come down here knowing we can win, e just come to have some fun.”

“These guys down here are tough, especially this year. They’ve got a lot of nice cars and do a lot of work on them.. They’ve really stepped it up. Before we were quite a bit faster.”

Montgomery Muscles by on Final Lap for Hobby Honors

In the second thrilling finish of the night, Allen Montgomery snuck past Adam Armstrong on the final lap for the victory. Armstrong, who lead the majority of the laps then gave way the last ½ lap as he slipped up in the final corners giving Montgomery, who worked his way up through the field, the opportunity to eke out the win.

Armstrong jumped out into turn 1 to lead the 20-car, 20-lap the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Ryan Gilland, Cory Adams, Mitch Calvert and Montgomery fell in line behind the leader. Adams got by Gilland for second on lap 1 with Montgomery taking fourth from Calvert. Debris in turn 1 brought out a lap 2 caution. Armstrong got a good jump as green flew again as Adams retook second from Gilland.

Andy Roller and John Watson both got around Calvert on lap 2 for fifth and sixth. Watson went by Roller a lap later for fifth. Watson caught Montgomery as hey both ran down and passed Gilland for third and fourth. Watson continued his charge to the front taking third from Montgomery on lap 8. At the midway point it was Armstrong, Adams, Watson, Montgomery and Gilland in the top five.

Watson slowed with a flat on lap 10, while Roller and Shawn Slezak went past Gilland. Jackie Dooley spun in turn 2 to bring out a caution. On the restart Adams got under Armstrong for the lead on lap 11. Armstrong got back inside Adams retaking the point on lap 13. Slezak was now pressuring Montgomery for third as Roller and Gilland ran side by side for fifth.

Jeff Kinniard slapped the wall and stopped for a caution. Once back to green Montgomery took second from Adams as he and Armstrong eased away. Montgomery hung on to Armstrong’s rear bumper keeping the heat on. As the white flag waved Montgomery took a look low and was able a bite coming of turn 4 to grab the victory in the Stephenville Starter, Ace Tire Service, Extreme Graphics, Texas Star Racing, Master Repair, HDC Fabrication, Niwdog Race Engines, reworked Destroyer Chassis.

“The motor was what got it for me,” commented Montgomery. “I’ve got a buddy that’s helping me out with motors this year. That meant all the difference coming off that last corner. Even hitting that rut it didn’t bog, got a bite and just went on with it.”

“There isn’t any plan out there on a track like that. I was running the top and really didn’t think I had anything for them. After that caution I went to the bottom and it had some bite. You had to run through a rut down there, but their cars pushed up and mine didn’t. I was able to get on by.”

“Nyle Godwin out of Iowa with Niwdog Racing Engines brought me motors and I don’t know what’s in them but it’s help close the gap between us and the north guys. I didn’t ask any questions, and it runs good.”

Abilene, Tx.(Feb 25th, 2011) Abilene Speedway kicked off the official IMCA racing season with the annual Icebreaker on the 1/4 mile, semi-banked, red clay track. Combined with the Icebreaker was the first race of three in the new Lone Star Series giving the southern drivers extra chances to pick up additional bonus points for national and regional points championship hunts, as well as running for a separate points fund.

Racing included heats, B-mains and an A-main for the IMCA Modifieds, Southern Sportmods, Stocks and Hobby’s, plus heats and a feature for the Jr. Mini stocks and Pure Stocks. Entries included drivers from seven states, Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New Mexico, Kansas and Colorado.

White takes Win One for 2011

Academy’s Keith White picked up in 2011 where he left off the previous season, in the Winners Circle. White got by local veteran Tommy Fain and Jacob Anson in the waning laps and eased away with Scotty Brown making a late charge to come home second. Anson, Andy Gage and Chase Jupe rounded out the top five.

It may have been a case of opening night jitters as green waved on the 20-car field. Gage jumped out front, but the pack stacked up behind him with Pat McGuire, John Gober, Kelly Allen and Charles Brewer tangling before completing a lap. Gage again got out front on green, but it as short lived as Jacob Anson snuck by to lead lap 2 bringing Chris Bragg along to second.

Chris Elliott went around in turn 2 to bring out a lap 3 caution. On the restart both Bragg and Monte Bolton slowed from top five spots and pulled off while caution waved for debris. Elliott and Bo Newton got together on the next try at a restart. Finally back to racing with Anson and Fain putting a gap on Gage, Shane Hiatt and White. Jupe and Brown both closed on that trio while White and Hiatt traded some paint..

Brown, using the high side, went around Jupe and Hiatt for fifth as the race neared halfway. At the crossed flags it was Anson, Fain, White, Gage and Brown holding the top five. Brown again used the top to get fourth from Gage on lap 11. Fain then began pressuring Anson for the lead getting along side on lap 13 and taking the point on lap 14. Brown caught White who now had Anson in his sights.

Newton spun on lap 15 to bring out a caution that saw White duck under both Fain and Anson on the restart to snag the top spot on lap 16. Fain hung on to White’s bumper, but got into to White who jumped a rut in turn 3. Fain rolled to a stop ending his night. Back to green Brown got past Anson for second while Jupe took fifth from Hiatt. White, in the Tracys Auto Sales, AMSOil, Extreme Graphics, Braka Operating, Tony’s Custom Carburetors, racinwithneal.com, TCI, Craftmasters, Belton Metals, Tubbs Paint & Body, Centex Motorsports, Hughes Chassis held the lead over Brown the final few laps with Anson and Gage side by side for third.

“It was a game of survival out there tonight,” said White. “You had to be able to get through the ruts. I don’t think I was he fastest car out there. There were several cars out there that were faster, but I was able to survive it at the end.”

“I just try not to use my car up early so I can be there at the end. It doesn’t always work out that way. You can kind of pick and choose what lines to run. Something you see early might come to you later. You need to be able to finish so I don’t abuse my car.”

“I think this Lone Star Series is going to help us I the national points chase.” added White who came up a few points short of a championship. “I was maxed out on wins last year and it was the bonus points that got us.”

Earl Edges Easterling for Sportmod Win

Tom Earl jr.(Haslet) got the point early in the 20-lap IMCA Southern Sportmod main from Steve Hayes. Earl and Hayes looked to run away and decide things among themselves until the final laps. Doug Easterling, running the top, made a mad dash as the race wound down coming a bit short as Earl out ran him to the line for the victory.

Hayes grabbed the early lead in the 20-car main followed by Jeff Kinniard, Todd Bartlett and Earl. Brad Shirley, Robert Speck, Justin Shaw and Easterling found themselves in a melee to bring out an early caution. The restart stacked up with Shaw, Speck and Shirley again getting tangled. Once back to racing Earl was able to get by Kinniard and Bartlett for second while Cody Frank grabbed fourth.

Frank then took third from Kinniard with Shane Priddy moving by Bartlett for fifth. Earl got along side Hayes for the lead just as yellow waved for debris in turn 2. On the restart Earl went low on Hayes to get the lead on lap 6, while Priddy and Kinniard were side by side for fourth and Bradley Poor came out of a three wide scrap with sixth.

Poor continued his march forward getting spots from Kinniard and Priddy. At halfway it was Earl, Hayes, Frank, Poor and Kinniard in the top five. David Elliott got turned around by Jesse Sobbing to bring a caution. Earl got away clean on the restart with Hayes still pursuit as they eased ahead of Frank, Poor, Easterling and Priddy.

Kinniard spun out of the top five, but kept going and caught a break when Elliott looped it the same lap and brought out a caution. Earl and Hayes again snuck ahead, with Poor and Easterling side by side for fourth. With two to go Easterling used the top to pass Poor and Frank. On the last lap Easterling got by Hayes and to Earl’s bumper.. At the line it was Earl in the Big Jim Racing, North Texas Carpet Care, Performance Transmissions, MobsterbizRadio.com, Reliable Home Service, WCH Engines, Big Chief Chassis holding on for the win.

“I was just holding on out there,” said Earl. “It was kind of rough out there. I just tried to go in straight, stay out of the ruts and come off straight. I just went out and found the line that worked best for me. My car would work on top or bottom. I passed Steve Hayes on the top, but had the caution come out. Then on the restart I used the bottom to get the lead. The car was set up just like it is every weekend at Kennedale or Boyd.”

Pritchett earns I-Stock Payday

Former IMCA Stock Car National champion Duain Pritchett(Combine) showed his winning form in the IMCA Stock Car 20-lap main. Pritchett used a bobble by early leader Cory Davis to get the lead. Pritchett then battled with long time rival Jeff Turner and Keith White, debuting his new ride, in the final laps for the hard earned win.

Davis snagged the top spot as the 19-car feature took the green with Billy Wade and Pritchett in tow. Pritchett got by Wade for second on lap 2, with Jesse Taylor getting third from Wade on lap 3. Don Killen was next to put Wade back a spot followed by Turner, leaving Wade door to door with Shane Priddy. Turner then picked off Killen and Taylor for third. Davis made a mistake on lap 5 with Pritchett seizing the opportunity to get the lead on lap 6.

The top five put some distance on White, Jason Batt and Joe Colyer who were slugging it out for sixth. At the midpoint it was Pritchett, Davis, Turner. Killen and Taylor. A bumper in turn 3 brought out the yellow on lap 12. On the restart Davis took a peek low on Pritchett, with White now trying high on Killen for fifth. Turner was able to get under Davis on lap 13 to take over second.

With the top three now nose to tail White got past Taylor for fourth then caught Davis for third. White looked up top on Turner as the white flag waved with Taylor and Killen battling with Davis. Pritchett, driving the Arte & Sons Paint & Body, Extreme Graphics, Brads Transmissions, Centex Motorsports, Grumpy Built Chassis held a slight margin on Turner and White as the checkers waved.

“Cory(Davis) hit a rut and left me enough room to get under him,” replied Pritchett. “It was pretty easy after that just riding around. I was pushing it as hard as I could. I didn’t know where Keith White and Jeff Turner were. I knew they would be coming. I didn’t know if it would be from the top or the bottom so I was giving it everything I had.”

“I think this 1 car(White) is going to give Jeff and I a run for the points this year. We’ll be at Boyd and Kennedale Friday and Saturday night. It will be a real dog fight every night. But we’ll be alright.”

Bissonette Best in Hobby Stocks

Stephenville’s David Bissonette chased early leader John Watson until he found an opening just past halfway. The defending Hobby Stock Southern Region Champion then held off a pack of northern invaders easing out to comfortable lead the final circuits to grab the victory. The win came after a pre-heat race motor change.

A big stack up in turn 1 slowed the start of the 20-car, 20-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature. When green finally waved Watson jumped out front with Bissonette on his tail while Adam Armstrong and Jeff Kinniard fell in line third and fourth. Watson and Bissonette swapped a little paint and played a game of bumper tag until yellow waved for an infield tire on the track.

The top seven broke away once racing resumed until Kinniard suffered a flat forcing him to pit. Bissonette gave Watson a try on the high side during lap 6, but fell back in line. Behind the lead duo Nyle Godwin took third from Armstrong on lap 7 as Ronnie Gregory and Shawn Slezak ran side by side for 2 laps. At halfway it was Watson, Bissonette, Godwin, Armstrong and Slezak in the top five.

Bissonette got along side and by Watson on lap 11 for the lead. Watson then spun, kept it fired and fell back to eighth. Watson then ended up on an infield tire for a lap 14 caution. Bissonette eased ahead on green while Godwin and Slezak battled for third. Bissonette took the white flag with a small lead and ran unchallenged to the checkers in the Big Jims Racing, AVDI, Stephenville Starter & Electric, Ace Tire Service, Bobs Custom Paint, Wilson Tire Company, AMS Race Engines, Terminator Chassis.

“I was working on (John) Watson as hard as I could,” commented Bissonette. “I just need a break to get by him. I really haven’t found anything different to keep up with the north guys. The thing that made the difference was all these guys helping me change out a motor before the heat race. Bryan Sewell, Jeff Turner the Mims brothers, Josh Whaley, Clint Newell and Malone. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have been able to race tonight. That was the big thing.”

BAYTOWN, Texas (Feb. 19) – John O Whittington took advantage of an early-race caution flag, then beat Kelly Shryock to the finish line to score the victory in Saturday afternoon’s USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy main event at the Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas.

From the outside of the front row, Chris Brown muscled his way past polesitter Shane Hebert at the drop of the green flag and proceeded to lead the first nine laps of the contest.

Defending USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes moved into the second spot to challenge for the lead, but he and Brown made contact while fighting for the top spot. Brown spun, but both drivers were sent to the rear of the field for having a hand in the caution..

Randy Timms would have set the pace for the restart, but a flat tire forced him to the pits and handed the lead to Whittington, who was running in the fourth spot when the incident occurred.

Taking advantage of a prime opportunity, the 29-year-old from nearby Vidor went unchallenged over the remaining 26 caution-free laps to secure the $2,000 win and his first since recording his only other USMTS victory at the Gator Motorplex in Willis on Oct. 23, 2009.

Shryock claimed the runner-up spot, with Cody Smith, Bumper Jones and Bobby Malchus finishing third, fourth and fifth. Sixth through tenth were Thursday night winner Ryan Gustin, Clyde Dunn Jr., 14-year-old Lucas Schott, Mark Dotson and Howard Willis.

After their excursion earlier in the race, Hughes and Brown were able to salvage 13th- and 14th-place finishes, respectively.

Dunn’s run to finish seventh from 21st on the starting grid earned him the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award.

Coupled with a fourth-place finish Thursday, Whittington leads the Southwest Region standings by three points (187 to 184) over Gustin, followed by Shryock (179), Hughes (162), Jones (159), Brown (155), Smith (141), T.J. Herndon (138), Dotson (136) and Dereck Ramirez (135).

Herndon came up one spot short of qualifying for the “A” Main in the third Real Racing Wheels “B” Main, but used the first provisional starting spot awarded this season to garner a 12th-place finish and secure his spot atop the Rookie of the Year standings after two events.

Friday night’s racing program was postponed due to heavy fog that settled in over the former Houston Raceway Park. The plan on Saturday was to rework the racing surface following the make-up program, and then stage another complete show.

A field of 80 USMTS Modifieds was on hand Saturday, including all 73 that were in attendance on Thursday plus seven new faces.

But once again, the fog rolled in and began to hamper visibility during Saturday’s early program and force officials to postpone the second half of Saturday’s doubleheader.

The $3,000-to-win finale of the inaugural Texas Spring Nationals will now be held on Sunday, March 20. The event will cap a three-race weekend in the Houston area that begins on Friday, March 18, at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, followed by a show on Saturday, March 19, at the Gator Motorplex in Willis.

BAYTOWN, Texas (Feb. 17) – The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy kicked off the 2011 season Thursday with the first of three nights at the Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas.

A field of 72 cars and drivers checked in to do battle in the Inaugural Texas Spring Nationals at the 3/8-mile clay oval located just east of Houston.

Twenty-year-old Ryan Gustin was the winningest driver during the 2010 season but it was Jason Hughes who took home the title of USMTS National Champion. The duo was at it again in Thursday’s lidlifter with Gustin getting the best of his 36-year-old counterpart.

Gustin, who picked up a win one week ago during Speedweeks in Florida, drew the pole position for the start of the 35-lap “A” Main while Hughes drew the eighth spot out of the eight drivers in the redraw.

A quick yellow flag came out before the first lap could be completed, but the field went caution-free the rest of the distance with Gustin leading the charge.

Heavy lapped traffic with less than 10 laps to go hindered the progress of ‘The Reaper’ and allowed Hughes to close in on his rear bumper.

With five laps to go, Hughes darted to the low side of the racing surface and nosed ahead of Gustin at the flagstand.

Undeterred, Gustin fought back three laps later to regain the lead for good and beat the defending USMTS National Champion to the finish line by two car-lengths.

Gustin’s 25th career USMTS triumph was worth $2,000 to the Marshalltown, Iowa, phenom and positioned him as the points leader in the Southeast Region.

Hughes, from Watts, Okla., earned the runner-up paycheck while Chris Brown of Spring held off fellow Texan John O Whittington of Vidor for the third spot.

Fertile, Iowa’s Kelly Shryock was running third in his heat race when a spin put him to the rear of the field and eventually into a Real Racing Wheels “B” Main, which he won.

In the main event, the nine-time USMTS National Champion clawed his way from 16th on the starting grid to finish fifth and earned the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award.

Dereck Ramirez, Jason Krohn, Randy Timms, Rodney Sanders and Bumper Jones rounded out the top-10 finishers.

In Limited Modified action, Sean Jones of Mansfield came from the 12th starting spot to take the win and $500 top prize. Shane Hebert of Lafayette, La., finished second, followed by Corey Babbitt of Channelview, Howard Willis of Dayton and Randy Timms of Wheatland, Okla.

The Inaugural Texas Spring Nationals continues this weekend with $2,000 to win Friday and the winner of Saturday’s main event pocketing $3,000.

USRA Western Flyer HotMods (Limited Mods) will also be running for $700 to win Friday and $1,000 to win Saturday.

BAYTOWN, Texas — Zack VanderBeek picked up right where he left off on Thursday with his second victory in as many nights Friday on the second night of the 4th Annual Texas Winter Nationals at the Houston Raceway Park.
“The Z-Man” led all 35 laps as he held off Jason Hughes, Ryan Gustin, Rodney Sanders and Kelly Shryock en route to a $3,000 payday.
VanderBeek drew the pole position for the 35-lap WIX Filters “A” Main with Sanders starting to his outside in the front row in a continuation of their one-two finish in Thursday night’s 30-lapper.
While VanderBeek headed to the low side of the racing surface, Sanders shot to the high side and kept VanderBeek in his sights for the first three laps before the leader began to pull away, prompting Sanders to dive to the low side in his pursuit.
Meanwhile, Hughes and Gustin formed a nose-to-tail draft around the top of the racetrack and began to run down the leaders.
Four caution flags during the main event kept the field close to VanderBeek’s bumper, but the New Sharon, Iowa, racer was able to pad his lead again on each restart and sailed to the checkered flag to score his third career win at the 3/8-mile clay oval in Baytown, Texas.
Bobby Malchus finished sixth and scored his second top ten finish, while Randy Timms came from deep in the field for the second night in a row and grabbed the seventh spot.
Tommy Weder Jr. Tyler Townsend and Corey Babbitt finished eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively.
With his runner-up finish, Hughes clinched his third straight USMTS Southern Series crown to add to his first USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour title which he captured in September.
Shryock sits second in the standings with Timms just two points behind heading into the final points race of the year on Saturday night.
Sanders is fourth and Gustin is fifth despite missing three events during the 2010 USMTS Southern Series campaign. Morgan Bagley is sixth, followed by Bumper Jones, Steve Holzkamper, Shane Hebert and Steven Whiteaker Jr.
In Thursday night’s accompanying Southern Limited Modified main event, Howard Willis completed a late-race pass of Randy Timms to take the checkered flag and claim the $700 winner’s share of the purse.
Southern Limited Modifieds will be racing for $1,000 to win on Saturday while $5,000 is earmarked for the USMTS Modified feature winner.
Race fans can enjoy all of the action on Saturday for just $10 per carload with a special free two-day pass available at O’Reilly Auto Parts Stores throughout the Houston area, or simply call the HRP ticket office at 281-383-7223 and they’ll hold your ticket(s) at Will Call for you to pick up on raceday.
Without your free ticket, grandstand prices are $15 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12 and children under 6 get in for FREE. Pit passes are $35.
The pit gate will open at 3 p.m., grandstands open at 4 and racing begins at 6
The Houston Raceway Park is a state-of-the-art 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval with a main grandstand seating capacity of 7,500 which includes fourteen VIP luxury suites and boasts a modern Musco Lighting system suitable for television productions.
The track is located east of Houston on I-10 to Exit 799, then 2.5 miles south on SH 99 (Grand Parkway), then 0.3 mile west on FM 565 in Baytown, Texas. Speedway entrance located at Gate 3. For more information, call the track office at 281-383-RACE or visit www.houstonraceway.com online.

Kennedale, Tx.,(Sept. 4Th, 2010)

Saturday concluded the 6th Annual IMCA Southern Sportmod Nationals with final heats and B-mains to fill the remaining 18 spots for the $2,000 Big A-main. The IMCA Modified ran another $1,000 to win All-Star Invitational qualifier with the local Street Stocks filling ot the night’s racing card.

Jones Outdistances Field for Southern Sportmod Nationals Crown

Mansfield’s Sean Jones used a good starting spot and strong car to capture the IMCA Southern Sportmod A-main event. Jones grabbed the lead on lap 1 and never looked back leading flag to flag. The closest anyone got to Jones was under caution and on restarts as Jones would easily pull away from the field.

Jones beat Tom Earl jr. out of turn 2 to take the lead in the 24-car, 25-lap IMCA Southern Sportmod Nationals feature. Earl fell in line second with JP Dowell and David Ferguson following. Defending event champ Dowell got second from Earl on lap 2 as the top eight sorted out single file. Last night’s qualifying winner, Troy Taylor, who drew a six, battled side by side with Matt Mueller for fifth. By lap 5 Jones had already shown his dominance running out a full straightaway lead.

Jones caught the back of the pack, running side by side on lap 7 but sliced his way through without missing a beat. Taylor was able to pick off a spot getting fourth from Ferguson on lap 9. Yellow waved on lap 11 for a bumper taking away Jones’ big advantage. On the restart Dowell got second from Earl followed by Taylor. Taylor then snagged second from Dowell on lap 12 while Ferguson and Earl ran wheel to wheel for fourth.

Randy Timms and Gabe Tucker both got by Johnny Torres for seventh and eighth. Coming to the crossed flags it was Jones opening up his lead, Taylor, Dowell, Ferguson and Earl in the top five with Mueller, Tucker and Timms three wide for sixth. As the top five separated out, the trio scraping it out for sixth kept the fight going until Tucker slowed and stopped along the wall to bring out yellow on lap 17. Jones got a good jump on green as Ferguson got inside Dowell for third.

On lap 18 Timms and Earl were side by side for fifth as yellow waved for Chase Allen who rolled to a stop on the back stretch. Back under green, Jones squirted away leaving Taylor and Ferguson battling for second. With two to go Ferguson gave Taylor a challenge low but to no avail. This gave Jones more distance than he needed to put the Ameritech Pest Control, Rocket Roadside Service, Ameritech Automotive, Wayne Brooks powered, HOT Chassis in the Winners Circle.

“Drawing a two was probably the biggest thing to help me,” replied Jones. “I usually don’t draw good. Then it was get out front early and get down to the bottom. I was expecting a track like last night, dry and smooth. But it was fast on the bottom and middle. I knew it was going to be a good race. I was probably more nervous as I’ve been in a long time”

“I tried to put as many lapped cars as I could behind me, but they didn’t keep them in the line up. Towards the end you kind of start hearing things and the right rear started bottoming out in the ruts. I was worried that I might roll a tire off or get mud packed in the wheel.”

“We freed the car up some from last night because of all the moisture in the track. When we hot lapped after the B-mains it was pretty tight so we loosened it up. We knew with the humidity the track would get tackier as it went along.”

“Since I don’t run wit these IMCA guys I really didn’t know how fast they would be. I haven’t run IMCA in about 12 years. I hope to run more IMCA races and will probably defend my title next year. The main difference between here and Cowtown is the banking. It’s fast track when you’ve the moisture despite the limited banking.”

“I want to thank Joe and Craig for giving me the chance to drive the car and of course all the guys that help. They gave me a good car to drive. That’s the first you have to have.”

Tucker Takes on Best for ROC Checkers

Representing Boyd Raceway, Gabe Tucker(Carbon, Tx.,) made up for some of the weekend’s bad luck in the SMM Race of Champions. Tucker got past early leader Acey Light and built a big lead that was lost to a late caution. Tucker held off Light and multi-time SMM Champion Keith White for the win.

Light beat Donald Owens into turn 1 for the lead of the 12-lap, 13-car feature. Tucker got past Owens while Randy Doyle and Bradley Poor ran side by side for fourth. Owens slipped on lap 2 and fell back with Poor getting third and White making his way up to fourth. Tucker ducked inside Light on lap 3 going wheel to wheel through turns 3-4. Tucker came out of turn 4 with lead on lap 4 while Poor jumped a rut giving White an opening to grab third.

As the top five spread out, Doyle, Ronnie Welborn and Cary Stephens battled for sixth. Welborn got by both for the spot on lap 6. White had just gotten past Light for second when caution waved after Caleb Stone and Albert McCall hooked bumpers on the back stretch erasing Tuckers big lead. On the restart White and Light resumed their fight giving Tucker the chance to put some distance on them. Tucker in the Braka Operating, Arthur Business Products, Triple T Trucking, Fast Signs, E&E Custom, Stacy Farms, Farris Racing Engines, Big Chief Chassis edged away for the victory.

“We studied the track a lot,” commented Tucker. “I don’t know how many laps we have this weekend. We just watched the track and how it changed. Listening to the experience around us helped and Keith(White) has helped us a ton in the Modified and Sportmod. I credit a lot of our success to Keith. Knowing Keith is around pushes me to drive harder, every lap.”

“We had some good runs this weekend even through our results don’t show it. We were moving forward and just had some bad luck in the A-mains. With the class of drivers and field we had, I think was we were good. Winning the Race of Champions gives us a good feeling as we leave for the Super Nationals in Boone(Iowa).”

White Whips Stout Field in Modified Main

National points contender Keith White once again showed the 24-car IMCA Modified field his rear bumper on his way to another win. White got by early leader Mike Hathcock and eased away from all but Jeremy Willis. White outdistanced Willis in the waning laps and held his car together despite rough track conditions.

When green waved on the 20-lap IMCA Modified main event Hathcock came out of turn 2 with the lead trailed by White, Tommy Fain, Jacob Pirkle and Willis. Fain saw his night end early when he broke on lap 1 and pulled to the infield. Willis, using the high side, got a run getting along side White for second on lap 3. Willis then slipped in turn 2 opening up the top for White who tried high on Hathcock, while Jeff Emerson got past Pirkle for fourth.

Emerson closed on the lead trio and the quartet ran nose to tail until White again jumped up top. White was able to get around Hathcock for the lead on lap 6. Brandon Watson slowed and stopped on track for a lap 8 caution that saw Emerson retire under yellow. White and Willis got away on the restart with Trevor Egbert getting the best of Chase Jupe for fifth. Yellow quickly came out again on lap 9 for debris.

Once back to green White jumped away from Willis, while Hathcock hooked a rut and fell to the back of he field. At halfway it was White, Willis, Pirkle and Jupe with Egbert side by side with Jay Bransom for fifth. Coming through the pack was Kevin Sustaire from his seventh row starting spot shooting by Bransom and Egbert for fifth. As White and Willis pulled away, Pirkle, Bransom and Sustaire were nose to tail for third. Sustaire used the top groove on Bransom to take third on lap 16.

With two to go Sustaire, Pirkle, Bransom and Matt Martin got wadded up going by the flagstand. Surprisingly all continued on without caution despite some serious cosmetic damage to all four. Willis never was close enough to mount a challenge on White who piloted the Traceys Auto Sales, Braka Operating TCI, Dura-Lite Technologies, Tubbs Paint & Body, Amsoil, Craftmaster Powder Coating, Stephenville Starter, Belton Metals, Cen-Tex Motorsports powered Hughes Chassis to the checkers.

“This Hughes Chassis just wades through those ruts,” explained White. “We just rolled right through them. You can’t tighten the car up even though you want to as slick as it was. But the rough spots make the car handle worse. You have to have it free and be easy on throttle.”

“This win puts us in the Fast Shafts Invitational deal, but we already have our 30 wins for the season. It doesn’t really do anything for that. The best thing was the good car count. It will help with our season average. If we can pull a half a point or so out of that deal we’ll be in good shape. Now we just go out there to win.”

“With this win we have a better feeling heading to Boone. We’ve had a good year and just ran into some bad racing luck yesterday. I hope we hit the round running when we get up there. You want to get in the show, first and foremost. We did that last year but never got to prove how much we could race with them. We’re in the All-Star race already so maybe we can show something there.”

Demetrius Carter lead the 19-car, 20-lap feature in turns 1-2 but slipped too high in turn 3. This gave Tyler Muirhead the chance to get by to lead lap 1. His time up front was short as William got by to take the point on lap 2. Tommy Williams broke a trailing arm on lap 2 to bring out a caution. On the restart Sterling got by Muirhead for second but spun coming off turn 2 sending him to the rear.

Once back under green Carter got second from Muirhead with Davis following to third. As Carter caught Williams for the lead Ron Palmer and Shawn Byrd tangled to slow the action on lap 5. During the caution Chris Kent veered through the infield, bounced off a couple infield tires and went head-on into the wall. Paramedics were quickly on the scene, cut him out of the car and transported him to a local hospital. Unfortunately Kent, who may have had a medical issue leading to the crash, was unable to be revived.

As the race restarted with a pall over the drivers and crowd, Williams and Carter pulled away from Davis and John Riechard. Behind them Muirhead and Ryan Powers were side by side for fifth. Williams jumped a rut in turn 4 and got a bumper shot from Carter, as Powers got by Muirhead and Sterling worked his way up to sixth. Powers got a run Davis and Riechard but slowed with sparks flying from under the rearend.

Williams and Carter again made contact fighting for the lead on lap 14 with Carter slowing and Davis getting second. Sterling made his way up to fourth on lap 18 when David Cook slowed on the back stretch for a yellow. Davis gave Williams a look low on the restart then a little rap on the on bumper. The top four ran nose to tail coming to take the white. Williams hit the rut in turn 4 and got tagged by Davis sending Williams around. Sterling found the opening and shot through to take the checkers.

2010 is final season for IMCA Modified,
Southern SportMod license combination

VINTON, Iowa (Jan. 7) – Drivers won’t be allowed to compete in both
IMCA Modified and Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMod
divisions after the 2010 season.

Thirty-nine racers did double duty in the two classes last year. The
dual license combination had been allowed since the Southern SportMod
class was introduced in 2004.

“Our consensus was that the Southern SportMods were an entry level
class, designed as an economical division for the typical Saturday
night racer,” said IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root, who
met with ButlerBuilt South Cen tral Region promoters in December. “We
are starting to see more drivers the class was not intended for
competing at higher paying specials. We want drivers who are
dedicated to the division racing against their peers at specials and
weekly events.”

> Modified-Stock Car and Southern SportMod-Stock Car/Hobby Stock
> license combinations will be permitted in 2011.
>
> Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod drivers have not been allowed to
> race Modifieds, Late Models or Sport Compacts at sanctioned events.
> Like their Southern counterparts, they can also pilot Stocks or Hobbies.
>
> “We have no problem with drivers going from a Modified to a Southern
> SportMod because of economics, because they enjoy it more or for any
> other reason,” Root said. “Those who planned to race both classes
> this year can still do so and receive all corresponding points in
> each division. This serves as an early notice so drivers can decide
> which division they want to compete in next season.”
>
> 30
>
> Rotating schedule sends Southern SportMod Nationals to Kennedale,
> Boyd, Abilene
>
> KENNEDALE, Texas (Jan. 7) – IMCA’s Southern SportMod Nationals goes
> on the road starting this September, with stops at three different
> tracks in Texas scheduled through 2012.
>
> Kennedale Speedway Park hosts the Sept. 2-4, 2010 event for Southwest
> Racing Specialties Southern SportMods. Boyd Raceway is the 2011 race
> site and Abilene Speedway rolls out the red carpet for the 2012 special.
>
> The first five Southern SportMod Nationals had been held at Heart O’
> Texas Speedway in Waco.
>
> “Promoters at seven Texas tracks indicated they were interested in
> hosting this race,” explained IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett
> Root. “We will review this rotation after it is complete and if it is
> deemed successful, rotate the event again in 2013-2015.”
>
> The Southern SportMod Nationals also moves from the second weekend of
> September, opposite the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals.
>
> “This switch will allow drivers to compete at both events,” said
> Root, noting that this year is the last drivers can hold both
> Modified and Southern SportMod licenses. “The date change also
> accommodates the travel schedule for IMCA employees and tech
> inspectors.”
>
> While the locations will change, the payout, procedures and format
> will be largely the same at upcoming Southern SportMod Nationals.
>
> The feature pays $2,000 to win and a minimum of $200 to start. An
> open practice session will be held Thursday, qualifying starts on
> Friday and Saturday’s show also sports a race of champions.
>
> The Sept. 4 show will be the only national and state point show for
> the class that weekend. It’s also one of five regional races that
> drivers can compete at for those points without the start counting
> against their 55-race limit.
>
> Other regional races are Feb. 20 at Abilene, March 21 at Clinton,
> Okla., Motorsports Park, May 30 at HO’T, July 4 at Texas Thunder
> Speedway in Killeen and Sept. 5 at 85 Speedway in Ennis.
Kyle, Tx.,(Oct. 10th, 2009) Thunderhill Raceway hosted their annual Stock Car Spectacular on the always tricky, semi-banked, 3/8 mile, D-shaped, paved track just south of Austin. Mother Nature played havoc with the two-day schedule turning the show into a one-day event with twelve classes on the racing card.

Highlighting the schedule of classes were the Texas Super Racing Series Late Models and Legacy Series, Texas Pro Sedans, Pro Modifieds, Pro Trucks, SportMods, Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas, along with local hotshoes from the ASA A-Line Auto Parts Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks, Mini Stocks and NASKarts.

TSRS Late Models and Legacy’s, Pro Mods and Trucks, Sportmods, Texas Pro Sedans and Dwarf Car all ran qualifying to set the fields for their feature races, while the local classes lined up by inverted points average.

IN TSRS Late Model qualifying Robert Barker set fastest time in the Mission Auto Parts, Circle K Fencing & Welding, Central Lath & Plaster, BMF Shocks, Oval Components, Screen Pro Graphics, Justice Borthers Ford with a lap of 15.212. Points leader Jake Kruger, Cody Smith, Mike Williams, Brian Moczygemba and Steve Green rounded out the top six qualifiers to be lined up by redraw. The Legacy Series saw Cole Runco put up the best time running a 17.460 .

Michael Umscheid posted the fastest lap for the Pro Modified class at 15.214 in his Tri-Lectric, AAA House Leveling, Premier Minerals, Circle Racing Wheels, Day Motorsports, Swenson Racing, The Brake Man, Jani-King sponsored car, while Jason Marshall laid down the best lap in the Pro Trucks with a 16.756. Sportmod time trials were headed by Don Painter tripping the clocks with a 16.084 in the Browning Auto Parts, Bennett Automotive, Catalytic Converters of Texas, Smileys Chassis.

Barker Bags Big Last Lap Win

With over 500 feature laps of racing over the one-day event, it was only fitting that the last lap of the season was one of the most exciting. Racelong leader Cody Smith and former San Antonio Speedway Late Model track champion, Robert Barker had a classic battle to finish that wasn’t decided until turn 4 of the final lap. Barker, who had shown Smith the nose several times, finally got along side going into turn 3. The two locked horns, traded paint and when the dust(or in this case mud) settled it was Boerne’s Barker crossing the line, while Smith ended up in the turn 4 tire barrier and wall.

As green waved on the 16-car, 75-lap TSTA Late Model main event, Smith jumped into the lead, but Mike Reininger spun in turn 2 to bring the yellow quickly quickly back out. On the second try Smith got huge jump when Brian Moczygemba got sideways out of turn 4 in front of the field. Remarkably he was able to get straightened out with no contact with any other cars and hanging on to second. Barker, Dillon Spreen and points leader, Jake Kruger rounded out the top five.

As Barker looked for a way around Moczygemba, Smith edged away. Barker finally got along side Moczygemba on lap 5 taking the spot, with Spreen tagging along to third. As the front runners gapped themselves out and settled in to click off laps, Bobby Teer jr got by Kruger for fifth. After lapping a couple stragglers Smith caught the back of a big pack on lap 25. Smith was able to dice through the traffic without losing ground to Barker trying to negotiate the same traffic.

Yellow on lap 39 slowed the action after Craig Sellman and Kendall Bumbera spun in turn 3. On the restart Smith and Barker got away clean while Spreen slipped and fell back to fifth. Barker turned up the heat on Smith getting the nose inside going into turn 1, with Smith slamming the door. Again on lap 53 Barker showed Smith the Blue Oval of his Ford only to get it shut in the door again.

Barker then fell in line behind Smith, cooling his tires, his emotions and regrouping for a late run. With five to go,Barker was back on Smith’s bumper with slight “hello” tap. Barker stuck the nose under Smith on lap 73 and again Smith closed the door abruptly. Coming to the white Barker stayed on Smith’s tail and made his move coming out of turn 2 this time.

Barker got along side going into turn 3. Smith tried to slam the door, but Barker was already in. The two locked wheels and slid up the track until Smith found the turn 4 wall and tire barrier. Barker won the scramble back to the line to the cheers and jeers of the standing crowd, with Moczygemba going around in the turn 4 melee. Smith recovered for a sixth place finish, but refused post-race tech for the top points chasers.

“The adrenaline buzz for this race won’t wear off for a while” replied Barker, who book-ended his season with Thunderhill Raceway wins. “We’ll be up all night.”
“This year was up and down. We started with a win, had some motor problems and that took us out of contact with the points. It was a good year once we got back on track.”

“Right now I really don’t know my plans for next season. We’ll just enjoy the of season and see what happens.”

“I got up next to him(Smith) and he didn’t want me to pass,” added Barker on the last lap incident. “I don’t know what his spotter told him, but it clearly wasn’t a good move. Three times I got the nose under him and he chopped me off. I wasn’t just going to give it to him. If he wants a wrecked racecar, fine. I was just going to wait until the last lap.”

The Pro Modified got off to an auspicious start when outside polesitter, Jason Marmon got sideways in front of the field. As the field spun and scattered, John Paul Kliewer got the worst of it tagging the wall hard in turn 4. Kliewer, Brett Boyd and Mike Williams were unable to make the restart. Once green waved on the Prismstream.com 50, Cory Lovell got out front with John Schultz, Anthony Gordon and Michael Umscheid in pursuit.

Umscheid, using the high groove, began picking off competitors taking Gordon on lap 3 for third an Schultz on lap 4 for second. It wasn’t long until Umscheid ran down Lovell for the lead and after a try high, Umscheid ducked low getting by Lovell on lap 13 for the lead. Umscheid, who was 5/10th quicker in qualifying, had no problem stretching out his advantage. Once safely out front, Umscheid put it on cruise control easily taking the win and Pro Modified Championship

A short field of Pro Trucks took the green for the DWIDude.com 35 with Jim Albert getting the lead trailed by David Lewein, Keith Riethmeyer and Shawn Paul Lehman. Riethmeyer got loose off turn 2 giving up spots Lehman, with Jason Marshall and Cary Stapp following. Marshall then took fourth from Stapp, in his first truck ride.

Lehman drifted too high on lap 6 with Marshall going by for third. After a brief side by side battle, Stapp got by Lehman for fourth. Marshall snared second from Lewein on lap 9 finding himself a half straightaway behind Albert. Slowly and methodically Marshall reeled in the leader catching him on lap 30. It didn’t take Marshall long to get past Albert on lap 31 who slipped high. From there Marshall kept on truckin’ along for the victory and Pro Truck title.

The TSRS Allison Legacy Series feature saw James Huff jump out front on lap 1, but give way to Charles Aiken on lap 2, with Rusty Mirth and Cole Runco getting by for second and third. Mirth got inside Aiken on lap 3 taking over the point on lap 4, with C. Runco taking second after a side by side battle with Aiken. C. Runco chased down Mirth for the lead taking the top spot on lap 18.

Mirth then gave up second to Aiken and third to Gavin Boyett. In a race that ran fairly clean the first ¾ of the event got ragged at the end with numerous spins in the final ten laps. With the race cut to a green, white, checkered finish C. Runco held off Stephen McCurley in the shootout to the flag.

In the Sportmod feature, Anthony Monroe got the lead from the outside row coming out of turn 2. Johny Lewellan ducked under Monroe on lap 2 leading back to the line on lap 3. Veteran dirt and pavement driver, Chris Swenson saw his night end early when he broke and rolled to a stop in turn 2. Once back to green Lewellan inched away from Monroe and Don Painter. A blown motor by Rusty Head on lap 34 slowed the action and rebunched the field.

On the restart, Painter got past Monroe for second and was hot on Lewellan’s tail. Shawn Paul Lehman, who had issues with his own car and jumped in his Grandfathers ride, found himself looking the wrong way on successive laps for yellows. With the race shortened to a green, white, checker finish, the two IMCA legal dirt cars of Lewellan and Painter battled it out for the win.

Lewellan, who’s car is crew chiefed by former Late Model ace Tommy Gural, held steady on the final two laps taking the victory in the Austin Mobile Marine, Absolute Masonry, Southwest Landscaping sponsored car. Painter used the power of “10” to wrap up the Sportmod title win his second place finish on 10/10, in the #10 car and who’s son is 10 years old.

Coming into the final race for the ASA A-Line Auto Parts Super Stocks, Cliff Lafont had already secured the track championship as well as the ASA western Regional title. It also marked the return of multi-time track champ and defending ASA National Champion, Cary Stapp in the familiar #99 car. Brent Reeves and Jason Stanley jumped out on green, with Shawn Paul Lehman splitting through the middle of a pack to take fourth.

Lehman got by JC Pilcher on lap 1 for third and was quickly on Stanley. Stanley spun in turn 4 on lap 4 with Lehman getting charged with contact and sent to the tail. On the restart Stanley kept the pressure on Reeves, while Bobby Lafont got by Pilcher for third and got hung out by Tommy Gural and Duane Toyne. Stanley got under Reeves for the top spot on lap 9. As Stanley crept away, the middle of the pack as playing a high speed game of bumper tag.

Just as B. Lafont took over second his night ended as he broke and rolled to a stop for a yellow. Once back to green, C. Lafont and Stapp got past Gural for third and fourth. Toyne caught Stanley for the lead on lap 20, with C. Lafont joining the lead duo on lap 21. As Toyne and C. Lafont battled for second, Stapp ran down them down.

With the top four now nose to tail th quartet was joined by Allen Alexander until he slowed and stopped on the front stretch bringing out a yellow. Back under green the top four stayed in contact, literally, as they scrapped it out. C. Lafont got by Toyne for second on lap 31 with Stapp and Toyne side by side. C. Lafont made contact with Stanley after a brake-check in turn 4 that sent Stanley around. In the stack up Stapp and Toyne had nowhere to go and Toyne stuck it in the turn 4 wall. Toyne was alright, but done for the night, C. Lafont was sent to the tail.

Stanley got a huge jump as green waved, but the track savvy Stapp closed in quickly. In the waning laps with Stapp hounding Stanley, Lehman and Chris Birmingham chased them down. On the last lap Stapp gave it the ol’ college try coming out of turn 4. Stanley won the drag race to the checkers by mere inches, but gave up the win to Stapp after failing to pass post-race inspection.

The Thunder Stock would be on the line for final points race of the season with M. Teague coming in with a 60 point margin over Anthony Gordon. As the race unfolded, Del Harris grabbed the early lead, while the two points contenders ran third and fourth. On a cool, breezy night the action heated up on lap 11 after Eric Robbins sr got spun into the muddy infield. Robbins came back out and dumped Steve Joyce under caution. Joyce looked to be back after Robbins and either thought better or just plain missed his target. Robbins was put on the trailer for the night, with Joyce actually getting his spot back

Once back to racing action, M. Teague umped up top and by Gordon and along side Patrick Burow for second. As M. Teague and Burow battled, Gordon snuck by both for second. Gordon then put the heat on Harris for the lead diving inside on lap 16. Harris slammed the door and as the two traded paint M. Teague found an opening to grab the point. Gordon’s championship hopes ended with a flat tire as he stopped to bring out a yellow.

This handed the lead back to Harris for the restart, that saw M. Teague take a look low and lock up the brakes to avoid contact. M. Teague then regrouped and got inside Harris on lap 17 running door to door through turns 3-4, before M. Teague secured the lead on lap 18. From there M. Teague pulled away, while Harris faded giving way to Joey Tschoerner, Burow, and Terry Tschoerner as they hung him out on the high side. As the checkers waved, it was M. Teague scoring the win and locking up the championship.

Coming to the start of the Grand Stock feature, Layton Carroll had pretty much locked up not only the track championship, but Rookie of the Year honors as well. Chris Trevino grabbed the point before giving way to Art Ganss on lap 5. I the pack Cody Smith, Carroll Floyd Reed and Carolyn Aramendia were marching towards the front.

Reed was first to challenge Ganss for the lead on lap 10 trying the high side. This gave Carroll and C. Aramendia an opening to get by for second and third. Carroll then tried the top, with C. Aramendia looking inside. Carroll looped it and collected Reed on lap 16. On the restart, C. Aramendia got by for the top spot with Reed and Ganss side by side for second.

Reed, Smith and James Aramendia tried three wide on lap 18 with Reed spinning taking J. Aramendia around. C. Aramendia pulled away once back to green and looked to be a runaway winner until she spun on her own, giving the spot back to Ganss on lap 20. On the restart, Ganss and Smith got a big jump with Smith looking high in turn 3-4 coming out with the lead on lap 21. Smith eased away for the win leaving Ganss, C. By lap 15 the lead duo had lapped the fifth place car of, at the time, Mike Knott.

The two continued their torrid pace lapping Cody Limerick in third and had just lapped Sergio Hexsel in third when caution waved for Dennis Taylor who blew up on lap 24. This put Hexsel back on the lead lap, and as green waved Johnson quickly got away from Merrill who had lapped cars to contend with. Hexsel closed on Merrill in the final laps with valuable points on the line. Johnson easily took the checkers, Merrill held second giving him the championship by only a single point, the closest in TPS history.

Waco Tx.,(Sept. 26Th, 2009) With the top eight drivers from Friday night’s A-qualifier already locked in, the remaining teams were left to slug it out for th final sixteen starting spots. Eight heats race would take the winner only to Big A-Main, with the others relegated to the B-mains taking only the top two.
After last nights redraw, Chase Jupe sat on th pole flanked by Ronnie Welborn, Kenneth Graves and Brandon Stewart filled row two, last years Race of Champions winner, Cary Stephens and multi-time SSM National Champion Keith White held down row three, with J.P. Dowell and Mark McDaniel rounding out the top eight.
Track conditions changed dramatically from rough and tacky Friday due to massive amounts of rain throughout the week, to drier, slicker and some runbber laid down for the final night. Kudos to the HOT Speedway crew for getting the track and pits ready to put on the show.

Dowell Pins Down IMCA Southern SportMod Nationals Championship

Killeen’s J.P. Dowell didn’t believe it when he found himself in Victory Lane after all was said and done in the 25-lap A-Main event. Dowell, who ran in the top five most of the race found himself in the right spot at the right time when Kenneth Graves and Keith White made contact battling for the lead. White was slowed by a broken tie rod, while Graves received the black flag for rough driving. This left an opening for the surprised Dowell to pick the big win, in the borrowed car from Randy Doyle.

Polesitter, Chase Jupe beat Ronnie Welborn into turn 1 for the early lead of the 24-car A-main event. Brandon Stewart ducked under Welborn for second while Keith White, Kenneth Graves and Welborn tried to go three wide for third. Stewart kept on the march getting the top spot from Jupe on lap 2, with Welborn and Graves side by side for third and White wheel to wheel with Cary Stephens for fifth.

It was three wide again for fourth between White, Welborn and Stephens before White slipped up and fell back to seventh. By lap 5 Stewart and Graves, starting to show a little smoke were pulling away from Jupe and Stephens. In the meantime White White was working his way back up getting fifth from Welborn on lap 7. Up front Graves was trying the high side on Stewart getting by for the lead on lap 9.

Jacob Pirkle would bring out the yellow on lap 9 after finding himself in the front stretch wall. On the restart, Graves got a huge jump, with White moving up to third. Dowell took over fourth from Jupe on lap 11. Coming tio halfway the top three of Graves, Stewart and White had put some distance on Dowell, with Jupe rounding out the top five. Stewart then turned up the heat on Graves for the lead diving low in turn 3 on lap 15. White saw the opening up top and got by Stewart for second on lap16.

The top three continued to run nose to tail with White challenging Graves. White pulled along side Graves on lap 20 running side by side through turns 1-2. Again White ducked under Graves on lap 21 and ran wheel to wheel as they made contact in turn 2 and again in turn 3. As White started to fade with a broken tie rod, Dowell got past Stewart for second. Lap 22 saw Graves receive the black flag as Dowell tried to close the gap. The black continued to be shown to Graves, who crossed the line first, but it was Dowell in the All-Tex Cabling, Braka Operating, Bones Cracked Ribs BBQ, McDermitts Club, Silver Wings Saloon, Rod & Beatles Rose Garden, Danny’s Transmissions, TINA AWBA Business Woman of the Year, E&E Collision, Pro Image Graphics, Cen-Tex Motorsports powered ASP(Ass Spankin’ Productions II) Chassis.

“I didn’t see what happened(to the leaders),” replied Dowell. “I was back there trying to catch Keith(White) and Brandon(Stewart) and saw them move up so I dove under both of them. The 4car(Kenneth Graves) had been smoking and I thought they were blascking flagging him for smoking. They showed the white and black flag, but I wasn’t sure. It was same at the checkers and I thought to myself that there’s no way I just won this race. Sure enough we were the ones to pull into the Winners Circle.”

“At the beginning of the race we were pretty good, struggling with some forward bite. Once we started getting into lapped traffic, I thought we might have a chance at this. We down to the end, had some drama ahead of us, and things just went our way. I’ve been racing for sixteen years and been on the other side before. Tonight things just went our way.”

“We ran Randy’s car last year in couple big races and did good. He asked me if I wanted to drive this weekend and I said heck ya, I’ll drive anything. Randy’s car is pretty good, he and I are neighbors and, of course he helps Keith(white) and Keith helps him. I wanted to thank Randy and everyone else that helps out.”

“There’s not much you can do on these cars(SportMods). I’m used to changing the bars and everything around. With these you pretty much just put fuel in it and go for it. My driving style is still pretty much the same. When it’s dry slick you have to keep from spinning the tires. With these you have to keep your momentum because they don’t have as much motor.”

“I feel terrible for Keith(White) it was his race,” added car owner Randy Doyle. “We were perfectly content with third or fourth place. But this is absolutely great. Keith and J.P. have helped me out so much that I wouldn’t be here without them. I’ve been with Keith for 14 years and he and his guys are just as proud as we are.’

” This is my first full year of racing and I had a pretty good year. But coming in here with all these hotshoe here, I didn’t want to tangle with them. J.P. has run my run my car and done good so putting him in my car wasn’t an issue. I just wanted to give him good equipment. I learn a lot from him when he drives the car. I’d love to be the one out there in the Winner’s Circle, but we do this as a team.”

White takes out frustration on Race of Champions field
After another disappointing SportMod Nationals run, Keith White took it out on the Race of Champions competitors. White worked his from the fifth row to the front, made a bold three deep pass for the lead, and then ran away from the pack for the victory.

National Points Contender, Chris Meyers got the jump on green, wile Ronnie Welborn and Robert Black ran side by side for second. Welborn held on to second, with Gabe Tucker getting by Black for third. Meyers chance for the win ended on lap when he slowed giving the point to Welborn. M<eyers rolled to a stop in between turns 3-4 to bring out a caution.

Once back to green, White got around Black for third and moved in on Tucker for second. Tucker held off the challenge and was putting pressure on Welborn for the lead on lap 4. With Welborn up top and Tucker on the bottom, White saw a hole open up in the middle and shot through for the lead on lap 6. In the opack, Johnny Torres moved in to battle with Jeff Turner for a top five spot.

White was increasing his lead over Tucker, while Turner closed in on Welborn for third. White stretched out his advantage with Welborn, Turbner and Tucker now nose to tail for the runner up spot. At the checkers it was White in the Traceys Auto Sales, Braka Operating, TCI, Amsoil, Belton Metals, Tubbs Paint & Body, D&S painting, Stephenville Starter, Cen-Tex Motorsports, Carrolls powered Big Chief Chassis.

“The hole just opened up,” commented White. ” I was faster through the middle(of the corners) on the top and the bottom then both of themn. They were getting in hard, but I could get through the middle better. It may have been a home field advatage knowing the race track too.

“The guys you run with in RoC hold their line and you can depend on them to race where they are. Everyone gives you room. I worked by Gabe(Tucker) and (Ronnie) Welborn and run up against them without them waivering.”

“Winning the RoC is some solice. Last year the car was torn up so bad we couldn’t even run this race. As far the incident this year, we’re battling and we’re racing hard. I don’t feel that was the way we needed to do it. I know Kenneth(Graves) didn’t do that on purpose, but it doesn’t change the outcome of things. I like Kenneth and his family, and I hate that it happened.”

On the restart David Suggs got by Robins for second, while David and Charlie Williams held a family feud for fourth. Rick Poteet moved in that battle putting the heat on D. Williams for fifth. Poteet was able to get by both Williams’ on lap 11 for fourth. Up front Suggs was pressuring Robins for second in the final laps as Henexson motored away to the checkers.
