Dinsmore Does Daily Double in Debut(of new car)

It didn’t take long for Kerrville’s Greg Dinsmore to find the set up on his new Harris chassis and return to early season form. After a month and a half of construction, waiting for parts and motor work Dinsmore debuted his new ride hot lapping mid week and parlaying that into a win Saturday night on it’s maiden voyage. Though with a support team of Bob Harris, multi-time Super Nationals winner John Logue and veteran IMCA hot shoe Jimmy Gustin you’d expect nothing less. Continue reading »

Kennedale, Tx.,(July 24th, 2010) Kennedale Speedway Park was the site for another round of weekly racing action on the semi-banked, ¼ mile dirt oval. The weekly series includes the IMCA Modifieds, Southern Sportmods, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks, plus the Street Stocks, Crate Models, Racesaver 305 Sprint Cars, Jr. Mini Stocks and an added attraction this weekend, the Lone Star Dwarf Cars.

The nights off track activities were highlighted by a tribute and prayer for ASCS Sprint Car drivers Travis Rilat and Wayne Johnson, both injured on the west coast, and the memory of Tyson Perez, crew member of Rilat who succumbed to injuries from a shop accident. Racesaver Sprint Car drivers passed the helmet through the stands taking up collections to help cover medical expenses.

On the track the Lone Star Dwarf Cars saluted Lori Palanza a long time official who lost her battle with cancer. The Dwarf Cars all flew the pink “Say No To Cancer” ribbons for the feature fittingly won by her son Dominick Palanza.

Pleasanton, Tx.,(April 24th, 2010) After a scheduled week off, which was probably a good thing after rains soaked the track, racing resumed at Pleasanton’s I-37 Raceway Saturday evening under sunny skies. Several new drivers showed up making their first appearance on the 1/4 mile, semi-banked clay oval just south of San Antonio.

There was plenty of action throughout the night with two cars taking tumbles, and two new first time winners. During intermission James Blaylock, still trying to shake down a new car, rolled over the turn 3 hill in hot laps. Blaylock rebounded to finish third in the main. Roy Easler clipped an infield tire while battling for the Front Runner lead and ended up on his roof. He was able to climb out uninjured. Continue reading »

Goliad, Tx., (Jan. 23rd, 2010) Goliad’s Shady Oaks Speedway kicked off its 2010 racing season with the first of four races on the 3/8 mile, high-banked clay oval. A short, but stout field of racers from Houston, to the Hill Country and along the coast signed in for the first of four Winter Series races. Several other racers filled the stands and pits to watch, with their cars still not completed.

The season opener also served as a homecoming, of sorts, as track owner/promoter Jim Scribellito made his return to the track after being seriously injured in a Dwarf Car grudge race during the middle of the 2009 season. Scribelitto suffered spinal injuries requiring treatment, surgery and rehab with an extended stay in a Houston area hospital.

Scribelitto and Ken Bulsterbaum, the new rack promoter for Texana Raceway Park, kept the crowd entertained as co-announcers. Hopefully Jim will be ready to take over the announcing reigns full time again when the regular season starts in March. Rumor has it, a special “guest” announcer will lend a hand during the next Winter Series event. Continue reading »

Kyle, Tx.,(Oct. 10th, 2009) Thunderhill Raceway hosted their annual Stock Car Spectacular on the always tricky, semi-banked, 3/8 mile, D-shaped, paved track just south of Austin. Mother Nature played havoc with the two-day schedule turning the show into a one-day event with twelve classes on the racing card.

Highlighting the schedule of classes were the Texas Super Racing Series Late Models and Legacy Series, Texas Pro Sedans, Pro Modifieds, Pro Trucks, SportMods, Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas, along with local hotshoes from the ASA A-Line Auto Parts Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks, Mini Stocks and NASKarts.

TSRS Late Models and Legacy’s, Pro Mods and Trucks, Sportmods, Texas Pro Sedans and Dwarf Car all ran qualifying to set the fields for their feature races, while the local classes lined up by inverted points average.

IN TSRS Late Model qualifying Robert Barker set fastest time in the Mission Auto Parts, Circle K Fencing & Welding, Central Lath & Plaster, BMF Shocks, Oval Components, Screen Pro Graphics, Justice Borthers Ford with a lap of 15.212. Waco Tx.,(Sept. 26Th, 2009) With the top eight drivers from Friday night’s A-qualifier already locked in, the remaining teams were left to slug it out for th final sixteen starting spots. Eight heats race would take the winner only to Big A-Main, with the others relegated to the B-mains taking only the top two.
After last nights redraw, Chase Jupe sat on th pole flanked by Ronnie Welborn, Kenneth Graves and Brandon Stewart filled row two, last years Race of Champions winner, Cary Stephens and multi-time SSM National Champion Keith White held down row three, with J.P. Dowell and Mark McDaniel rounding out the top eight.
Track conditions changed dramatically from rough and tacky Friday due to massive amounts of rain throughout the week, to drier, slicker and some runbber laid down for the final night. Kudos to the HOT Speedway crew for getting the track and pits ready to put on the show.

Dowell Pins Down IMCA Southern SportMod Nationals Championship

Killeen’s J.P. Dowell didn’t believe it when he found himself in Victory Lane after all was said and done in the 25-lap A-Main event. Dowell, who ran in the top five most of the race found himself in the right spot at the right time when Kenneth Graves and Keith White made contact battling for the lead. White was slowed by a broken tie rod, while Graves received the black flag for rough driving. This left an opening for the surprised Dowell to pick the big win, in the borrowed car from Randy Doyle.

Polesitter, Chase Jupe beat Ronnie Welborn into turn 1 for the early lead of the 24-car A-main event. Brandon Stewart ducked under Welborn for second while Keith White, Kenneth Graves and Welborn tried to go three wide for third. Stewart kept on the march getting the top spot from Jupe on lap 2, with Welborn and Graves side by side for third and White wheel to wheel with Cary Stephens for fifth.

It was three wide again for fourth between White, Welborn and Stephens before White slipped up and fell back to seventh. By lap 5 Stewart and Graves, starting to show a little smoke were pulling away from Jupe and Stephens. In the meantime White White was working his way back up getting fifth from Welborn on lap 7. Up front Graves was trying the high side on Stewart getting by for the lead on lap 9.

Jacob Pirkle would bring out the yellow on lap 9 after finding himself in the front stretch wall. On the restart, Graves got a huge jump, with White moving up to third. Dowell took over fourth from Jupe on lap 11. Coming tio halfway the top three of Graves, Stewart and White had put some distance on Dowell, with Jupe rounding out the top five. Stewart then turned up the heat on Graves for the lead diving low in turn 3 on lap 15. White saw the opening up top and got by Stewart for second on lap16.

The top three continued to run nose to tail with White challenging Graves. White pulled along side Graves on lap 20 running side by side through turns 1-2. Again White ducked under Graves on lap 21 and ran wheel to wheel as they made contact in turn 2 and again in turn 3. As White started to fade with a broken tie rod, Dowell got past Stewart for second. Lap 22 saw Graves receive the black flag as Dowell tried to close the gap. The black continued to be shown to Graves, who crossed the line first, but it was Dowell in the All-Tex Cabling, Braka Operating, Bones Cracked Ribs BBQ, McDermitts Club, Silver Wings Saloon, Rod & Beatles Rose Garden, Danny’s Transmissions, TINA AWBA Business Woman of the Year, E&E Collision, Pro Image Graphics, Cen-Tex Motorsports powered ASP(Ass Spankin’ Productions II) Chassis.

“I didn’t see what happened(to the leaders),” replied Dowell. “I was back there trying to catch Keith(White) and Brandon(Stewart) and saw them move up so I dove under both of them. The 4car(Kenneth Graves) had been smoking and I thought they were blascking flagging him for smoking. They showed the white and black flag, but I wasn’t sure. It was same at the checkers and I thought to myself that there’s no way I just won this race. Sure enough we were the ones to pull into the Winners Circle.”

Waco, Tx., (Sept 25th, 2009) After a two week delay after Mother Nature spread her wrath, the 5th Annual IMCA Southern SportMod Nationals kicked off Friday night with qualifying heats, B-mains and A-main qualifier for Saturday night’s $2,000 to win finale. Cars from all over the region, state and surrounding states signed in with nearly 60 entries vying to for the 24-car starting field.

Also racing were the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Hobby Stock, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, Cruisers, Twisters and Jr. Mini Stocks all finishing out their season points races. All classes would run features only starting straight up by points.

On display in the pit area was a roll-over simulator brought from New Mexico by Paul Lapaire, from the Ryan Bard Safety Foundation. Lapaire has been an innovator in safety devices since the loss of his son-in-law to be, Ryan Bard. Along with “Flipr” the simulator, Lapaire has also developed a simple, inexpensive spring devise to help hold fuel cell flapper valves flat to eliminate spills in case of a rollover.

Home Track Edge Works for White
Local ace Keith White used home track advantage to his benefit taking the first step towards a second IMCA Southern SportsMod title. White, who started eighth, patiently worked his way forward and was in the right spot at the right time when Leader, Eric Tomlinson suffered problems. White eased away the final laps to grab the win.

As green waved on the 24-car field Steven Abbey beat Scotty Wallace into turn 1 for the lead. Wallace suffered a flat right rear and coming down the front stretch got run over triggering a chain reaction accident that collected seven other cars. S. Abbey again got the lead on the next start with Tomlinson, Kenneth Graves and Jacob Pirkle in pursuit. Pirkle got around Graves for third as the top three sorted out, while the rest of the field was still side by side.

JP Dowell looked outside Graves for fourth on lap 4 and nearly got squeezed into the back stretch wall. Dowell finally completed the pass on lap 5. White then moved in on Graves and almost found the same spot on the back stretch wall when Graves again drifted up coming out of turn 2. S. Abbey had his night go bad on lap 7 after a trip through the infield and then to the pits. This handed the lead to Tomlinson on lap 8.

White eventually got past Graves and closed on Dowell, while Tomlinson pulled away from Pirkle. Yellow waved on lap 11 when Ronnie Welborn and Chris Cogburn made contact sending Cogburn around and into the mud. On the restart, Tomlinson got away clean, with Pirkle trying to hold off White for second. Dean Abbey lost the door panel to quickly bring the caution back out.

The next try was single file with White looking high on Pirkle for the spot. White again tried the high side on lap 12 before ducking under Pirkle on lap 13 to get the position. White quickly closed on Tomlinson who was beginning to slow with handling issues. White snagged the lead on lap 14 while Tomlinson slowed dramatically. Don Painter then ran up the back of the slowed Tomlinson ending both their nights.

White then began stretching out his advantage over Pirkle and Dowell who held a good margin back to Chase Jupe, Graves, Welborn, Brandon Stewart and Cary Stephens, who held down the final transfer. With two to go, White had built a half straightaway lead, while Mark McDaniel and Jeff Turner joined the fight for eighth. At the checkers it was the track champion, White in the Traceys Auto Sales, Braka Operating, TCI, Amsoil, Tubbs Paint & Body, D&S Painting, Cen-Tex Motorsports, Stephenville Starter, Belton Metals, Carroll’s powered Big Chief Chassis.

“I think we had something for Eric(Tomlinson),” replied White. “He was kind of running the middle to the bottom, and I was running ther top. I think if I had snuck up on him and got him cleared I would have been OK. I got hung up behind the 4g(Kenneth Graves) and the 210(Jacob Pirkle) they were hitting the ruts and bouncing over in front of me.

“We redrew a six and there’s a lot of racing tomorrow. We don’t know how the track’s going to be tomorrow. Hopefully it will be a track we can pass on. As much rain as we’ve had they did an excellent job with the track and the pits. It was racey even as rough as it was.”

“I need to concentrate on the SportMod. I need this win and need the points. I’ll be all over the car tomorrow to make sure nothing is going to fall off of it.”
