Pleasanton, Tx.,(March 12th, 2011) It was a record breaking opening night at Pleasanton’s I-37 Raceway Saturday night as action kicked off on the ¼ mile, semi-banked ,dirt track just south of San Antonio. A near capacity crowd(525) packed the grandstands while 84 cars filled he pit area to overflow.

“This is our biggest opening night crowd,” stated track promoter Jim Knudtson. “We’ve had larger car counts during the season, but never this many on the first night. There are other drivers I’ve spoken to that still don’t have their cars ready yet. I think we’re looking forward to our best year ever.”

The nights racing card included the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Southern Sportmods, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Front Runners. Several drivers picked up where they left off last season with winning performances, while two picked up their first ever victories in the always competitive IMCA Sportmod and Front Runner classes.

Dinsmore Dialed-In for Modified Main

Greg Dinsmore(Kerrville) showed his winning form and rebounded from a trouble plagued race at Abilene Speedway earlier in the year. Dinsmore wired the field leading every circuit in the 20-lap IMCA Modified main. On restarts, Dinsmore was hounded by Harris Racing Chassis mate, and last years champion, Bill Pittaway, but in the final green flag run was able to ease away for the victory.

As the green waved Dinsmore, who redrew outside front row, beat polesitter Robert Liese jr. into turn 1 leaving him side by side with Pittaway as Rick Green and Dennis Taylor followed. On lap 1 Liese spun in turn 2 and kept it fired only to loop it again in turn 4 for an early caution. On the restart Pittaway tried to sneak in low on Dinsmore, while Jamie Campbell got by Taylor for fourth.

Campbell then grabbed third from Green with Taylor moving in. Taylor put Green back to fifth on lap 5. Billy Meyer had his ride go silent rolling to a stop in turn 4 for a lap 5 yellow. Dinsmore got away clean on the restart with Taylor and Campbell side by side for third. At the crossed flags Dinsmore had built a lead over Pittaway, with Campbell, Taylor and Green rounding out the top five.

Campbell put the pressure on Pittaway and got along side on lap 11, but was held off. Andy Anderson spun on the back stretch to bring out the final yellow on lap 12. Once back to green Pittaway again took a look on Dinsmore, while Green was trying high on Taylor. The waning laps saw Dinsmore able to inch ahead easily putting the racetechinfo.com, Sundowner RV Repair, Lowery Plumbing, Wells Designs, JBHotshots, Cen-Tex Motorsports, Wells Race Engines, Harris Chassis in the Winners Circle.

“The motor I borrowed from Bill Pittaway in Abilene really pulled good,” said Dinsmore. “The car rotated good on the top. The track had a little bit more up there. The car liked it a lot. I talked with Bill about his set up and tried to help him along. He hot lapped my car and I think he liked it. That’s what you do with (Harris) team mates.

“The race was good and the car was awesome. I can’t say much more than awesome. We had some bad luck in Abilene and I thought I was going run into more down here tonight. I was just waiting for the next thing to go wrong.”

Walker Runs to First Ever I-37 Win

Michael Walker made his first trip up from The Valley a memorable one. Walker took over the top spot from early leader Travis Penney, who kept the heat on Walker until tagging the wall. Walker then had to fend off defending track champion Johnny Torres and a charging JJ Jennings to score his inaugural win.

Eighteen cars took the green at the start of the 20-lap IMCA Southern Sportmod feature. Randy Yount lead the field into 1 with Barry Codling trying a crossover move that stacked up the field in turn 2. On the restart, Yount again led into turn 1, but Penney came off the top of turn 2 with the lead. Walker, Ray Doyon III, Yount and Larry Jernigan sorted out behind Penney.

Kris Rye got up on two wheels and spun collecting Jeff Nix for a lap 1 caution. Once back to racing Walker wasted little time getting under Penney for the lead on lap 2. Torres was on the move getting by Jason Stanley for sixth, then Jernigan for fifth. Jernigan, Stanley and Jennings, who started out back, were three wide for sixth on lap 3.

Torres continued his march forward getting beside Yount for fourth. Both gained a spot when Doyon went around from third and fell to the tail. Torres finally secured the spot on lap 6, while Jennings snagged fifth from Stanley. Coming to halfway it was Walker, with Penney on his rear bumper, Torres, Jennings and Yount in the top five..

Penney tried the high side of Walker only to slap the front stretch wall, ending his night on lap 11. Walker got a slight advantage on Torres as the green waved again, with Stanley and Moe VanKirk wheel to wheel for fifth. As the top three pulled away VanKirk got fourth from Yount, while Rye fought his way back to a top five pot after his earlier spin. Walker, in the CW Racing, CM Graphics, CW Speedway, homebuilt chassis and in house motor, crept away from Torres to take his first I-37 Raceway checkers.

“I just kind of guessed at the set up,” replied Walker. “This is my first time to run here. It was a little loose. After that caution the car really went away. I don’t now if the tires went away or cooled down or what.”

“I’ve got a good baseline that I start with. I just go off my ride heights most of the time. Then I just watch the track to see what it’s going to do. I used to race in McAllen so I’ve run on dry tracks a lot. This was pretty slick and didn’t rubber up like McAllen.”

“We had some bad luck up at TMS Dirt track last week. We made the A-main but blew a radiator hose. We didn’t change a thing from up there, our car was completely IMCA legal for that race. It was a bad day, we really missed the set up there.”

Dinsmore Double in Limited Late Models

Greg Dinsmore scored a second win for the evening despite a broken front suspension and sputtering carburetor. Dinsmore, who had to work his way from the back, battled hard with Trey Votion until getting the lead near halfway. Dinsmore was able to hold off Votion, and last years champ Richard Bartosh on restarts to take the victory.

On the initial start Votion got out front, but Landon Farquar scraped the wall and stopped in turn 2. On the second start Bartosh beat Votion into turn 1, but Wesley Skains and Ron Sprayue made contact in turns 3-4 sending Skains around for another yellow. Finally under green Votion got the point with Bartosh, Craig Crawley and Dinsmore quickly up to fourth.

Dinsmore got under Crawley on lap 2 for third, then got second from Bartosh on lap 4. Dinsmore and Votion then went door to door for several laps with Votion holding the spot until yellow waved for Larry Lewis who went up in smoke and had a small fire. On the restart Dinsmore again got the nose under Votion and the battle was on again with Dinsmore sneaking his bumper out front on lap 9.

Andrew Hessler spun in turn 2 for a lap 10 caution. Votion tried up top on Dinsmore as green waved again, but gave up second to Bartosh. Crawley slowed from fourth backing up that battle with Matthew Hodges getting by Gary Hunter and Robert Danielson for the position. Hodges would then go around in turn 4 giving up the spot.

Hunter, a multi-time track champ, had a spin on lap 18 setting up a green, white, checkered finish. Dinsmore’s car sputtered on green with Bartosh trying to get under and Votion high. The car picked up and Dinsmore held off Votion and Bartosh the final circuits in the TazRacing, Sundowner RV, Quality Ambulance, Culligan Water Conditioner, Texas Concrete, Climate Control, Hansco Demolition, reworked Dinsmore Chassis.

“I’ve been non-stop with this car, night and day, trying to make it go,” explained Dinsmore. “As much as you work on them there’s always something going wrong. I had two issues. First I broke the spring adjuster on the left front early in the race. I thought I was done, but it wasn’t a ball joint, the tires were pointed straight and I was able to keep running.”

“The car still felt ok, but you couldn’t land it hard. You had to stay on the gas and brakes and drive it totally different. I almost pulled off. Once I got through traffic and got it to ride off the right rear it was better.”

“Then with about five to go the carburetor started acting up. It would bobble and go. On the restart it wouldn’t go. That one start I got hit in the rear and it took off. I was able to keep it going and pull away. It had a couple hiccups, but we got through it. The car was amazingly fast for what it is.”

“I have to thank the Hunters for giving me this opportunity. The next three races I have one mission in mind.”

Defending and multi-time champ, Wade Jones moved along side Hilla while AJ Wernette and Mike Lyon ran door to door for third. Jones got the top spot on lap 2 while Wernette secured third. As Jones puled away, Tommy Casey got past Lyon for fourth.

As Hilla, Wernette, Casey and Lyon battled, Joseph Batot spun in front of them as he was being lapped. Casey got side by side with Wernette and took the spot only to spin in turn 4 for a lap 9 caution. Jones quickly edged away on green while Lyon, Wernette and AJ Dancer battle for third. At the checkers it was Jones in the Opiela Mechanical, Mission Racing, SABFI, Jeff’s Auto Rebuilders, Camaro adding anther win to his impressive total.

A field of seventeen cars took the green for the 20-lap Pure Stock feature with past track champ Janel Hilla getting the lead trailed by Brandy Ramzinski, William Cavender, Randy Frautschi and Rick Snider. Justin Henley and Hunter Flanagan tangled in turn 4 to bring a lap 1 yellow. Back under green Ramzinski looked high on Hilla, while Devin Adler got by Snider. Hilla and Ramzinski were side by side for the lead when Cavender spun from third bringing out the yellow on lap 7.

Ramzinski snuck past Hilla on the restart to lead lap 8, with Frank Okruhlik marching forward taking fourth from Snider and Mike Harrison following to fifth. At halfway it was Ramzinski, Hilla, Adler, Okruhlik and Harrison in the top five. Okruhlik got around Adler for third on lap 10 and a caution for debris on lap 11 rebunched the field.

The top three stayed nose to tail on the restart, while Cody Leonard got by Harrison for fifth. Harrison, who was having power steering trouble, slowed to exit and got shoved out the pit entrance. Frautschi and James Watson tangled in turn 3 with a caution flying on lap 13. Once back to green Okruhlik was trying the high side of Hilla for second.

Okruhlik grabbed the spot after a brief side by side battle and used the run to get along side Ramzinski for the lead. Okruhlik got the lead from Ramzinski who spun in front of the field, but was missed by everyone. Okruhlik. now out front for the lap 15 restart, quickly eased away, while Adler and Leonard fought for third. Okruhlik, in the Odie Racing, Ximenez Trucking, Chevy ran away while Ramzinski worked her way back to a top five finish.

At the start of the 15-lap Front Runner feature defending track champ Nick Hencey was first to turn 1, but it was Jesse Sandoval using the high side off turn 2 to grab the lead. Hencey, Eric Jenkins, Roy Easler jr. and Hailee Marcx trailed Sandoval. Trevor Bettis got around Marcx for fifth but went too high in turn 4 giving back spots to Marcx an Charles Earnhardt III.

A lap 7 caution for debris slowed the pace with Sandoval getting a jump once back under green. Easler was able to get by Hencey on lap 8, but was well behind Sandoval. Bettis and Landon Sowder made contact off turn 4 with both ending up in the infield, and no caution. Sandoval easily cruised ahead of Easler to take his first I-37 Raceway victory.

ABILENE, Texas (Feb. 21) – After a big win on Saturday night, Chris Dawson capped off the Icebreaker weekend with his second visit to Abilene Speedway’s victory lane.

Dawson jumped into the lead at the start and never looked back as he went wire to wire in topping Sunday’s IMCA Modified main. Dawson was chased by Charles Brewer early, then Brian Flowers in the latter stages, but after three late cautions took the checkers by several car lengths.

With one to go, Dawson got a couple car lengths on Flowers, who in turn had a gap in front of Bo Newton, Vince Ogle, Danny Hogue and Kelly Allen. A three car tangle further back didn’t affect the outcome as Dawson motored to the $500 checkers.

Other feature winners were Justin Shaw in the Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMods, Cary White in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Allen Montgomery in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks.

Shaw held off challenges from fellow young gun Steven Abbey in the early stages of the 20 lap Southern SportMod main, then kept Gary Underwood at bay during the waning laps for his first ever win at Abilene.

White was in the right spot to pass early leader Joe Colyer after tire troubles for Damon Murty. White snuck past Colyer on a restart then held the point to the checkers, ending two nights of domination by northern invader Jeff Joldersma.

Murty got his nose under Colyer on lap 11 and finally got by on lap 12, only to have the right front go flat. That put Colyer back to the lead for the restart, but White snuck by for the lead the next time around.

Montgomery’s story was wreckers to checkers, after he rolled on Saturday, refired to finish 10th, then passed Hans Houfek late to win on Sunday.

The lead duo merged with lapped traffic, with Houfek glued to Montgomery’s back bumper at the finish line.

Shaw and White both took home $300 for their efforts. Montgomery’s win paid $250.

ABILENE, Texas (Feb. 20) – Night two IMCA Modified honors at Abilene Speedway’s Icebreaker special belonged to Chris Dawson.

Dawson got inside and passed early leader Chris Elliott on lap 13, then inched away to grab the $500 victory.

Jeremy Zorn took second away from Elliott and held off hard charging Keith White on the final circuit to keep the hard earned spot.

Jeff Emerson wound up with the $750 win after White was disqualified in post-race inspection following the Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMod feature.
ABILENE, Texas (Feb. 19) – Monte Bolton was the class of the IMCA Modified field on the first night of Abilene Speedway’s season opening Ice Breaker special.

Bolton worked his way up from row three, taking over the top spot near midway from early leader and coincidentally his car owner Tommy Fain. Bolton had to hold off the charge of David Elliott after a restart to snag the $500 victory.

Fain began to fade with a sour motor with six laps left and Bolton began putting some distance on Elliott, Charles Brewer and Gabe Tucker. Kevin Goben and Chris Abelson ran side by side for fifth.

In the waning circuits, Abelson made a run and got around Goben on lap 17, then passed Brewer and Tucker on the final lap. Bolton took the checkers unchallenged.

The first of three weekend race programs at Abilene brought drivers from Texas, New Mexico, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Minnesota. Joining Bolton in victory lane would be fellow Texan Mark Patterson in the Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMods, Iowan Jeff Joldersma in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Nebraskan Litton Stute in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks.

Patterson jumped out front early and used his track experience on restarts to easily rebuild big leads in the SportMod show.

Jeff Emerson reeled in Steve Hayes for second and Bradley Poor took over third on lap 12. Neither could mount a threat, however, and Patterson sped to the $300 checkers.

Joldersma beat pole starter Eric Jones into turn one and ran away from there, going the distance in the caution-free $300 to win Stock Car event. He was halfway back to Iowa before second pace finisher Damon Murty crossed the stripe.

In a league of his own, Joldersma built a full straightaway advantage by lap seven and caught the rear of the field on lap 12.

Stute was in the proverbial right place at the right time and ended up the surprise winner of the Hobby Stock feature.

He was running behind his father Leland and two-time defending national champion Shannon Anderson when the front pair tangled in the final corner.

Stute found himself first across the line in the $250 to win contest.

The first regional race of the season for Southern SportMods gets top billing on Saturday. That feature pays $750 to win.

Pit gates open at 3 p.m., hot laps are at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m.

All four divisions are in action again on Sunday.

Feature Results

Emory’s Kevin Sustaire was Mr. Smooth on the tricky track throughout the 30-lap Big A-Main. Sustaire had to be, because Chris Dawson was stuck to his bumper for a big part of the race. Sustaire was able to hold Dawson at bay to grab the big win and $3,000 payday.

Sustaire was first into turn 1 as green flew on the 20-car IMCA Modified main event. Hot on heels were, Dawson, Keith White, Trevor Egbert and Gabe Tucker. The top four stayed bumper to bumper as they eased away from Tucker who had a gap back to Jeremy Gossett. Tucker closed the gap back up on the lead quartet, with Gossett and Jeff Emerson heading the next pack.

Dawson was just starting to look under Sustaire for the lead when Gossett and Emerson tangled in turn 3 to bring out the races only caution. Sustaire got some breathing room on the restart and held it coming to halfway, with Dawson, White, Egbert and Tucker still holding the top five spots.

Sustaire lost some ground on lap 19 in traffic, giving Dawson the chance to reel him in. As the final ten laps wound down, Egbert was pressuring White for third, while Chris Elliott was looking for a way past Tucker for fifth. With five to go, Dawson inched ever closer and was on Sustaire’s bumper with two to go. Dawson gave him his best try on the final lap, but it was Sustaire driving the Darby Diesel Repair, Ken Parker Services, Cen-Tex Motorsports, TRE Chassis holding on for the win.

“Just like any other Abilene show you have to have a good draw,” commented Sustaire. “I really think we won this race on Friday night. I’ve won in the I-Stocks before and it was another good starting spot there too.”&l

Underwood Fend off Flanary in SportMod Scramble

Polesitter, Paul Norman was the early leader at he start of the 19-car, 20-lap IMCA Southern SportMod main. Norman go an early challenge by Doug Easterling as Gary Underwood and Russell Flanary made their way forward. Easterling used the high side to get by Norman to lead lap 4, while Flanary and
Underwood went by Norman three wide.

Under moved past Flanary for second, while Michael Tennison and Josh McGaha took fourth and fifth from Norman. Flanary and Underwood were wheel to wheel for second on lap 6 as they tried to chase down Easterling. The duo caught a break on lap 8 when Easterling got loose coming off the corner allowing Underwood to snag the lead followed by Flanary to second.

At halfway it was Underwood, Flanary, Easterling, Tennison and McGaha holding the top five spots. Stephen Robison and Kelly Martin hooked bumpers on lap 11 with Martin going around as they scrambled to get unhooked. In the back up, Mark Patterson got the sheet metal peeled of the right side. On th restart, McGaha put the heat on Tennison as the two leader got away.

McGaha was able to make the pass and get beside Easterling for third, taking that spot on lap 13. A spin by Alex Bannowsky on lap 15 brought the yellow back out. Coming to the restart cone, the middle of the field accordianed with lots of contact made, but everyone hanging on and continuing. Danny Hogue moved to the high side and was making a charge getting by Tennison for fifth on lap 16. Hogue kept marching forward snaring fourth from Easterling and getting along side McGaha for third.

Yellow was out on lap 17 after Tyler Fain had mechanical trouble and left trail of fluid around the track. Once green flew again Flanary took a look inside Underwood for the lead, while Hogue returned to the fight with Easterling for third as the two made some contact. Hogue would then spin on lap 18 to bring the caution back out.

On the green, white, checkered restart the lead got out clean while Tennison got loose with Robert Barnett getting by for fifth. Justin Shaw made a move to get beside Barnett, but would give sixth back to Tennison. Flanary gave it the ol’ college try on the final lap, but couldn’t get by as Underwood in the A-City Speed, Donnie Underwood Plumbing, Cotton Race Engines, HOT Chassis held him off for the victory, his third in a row.

“It was all about driving smooth,” replied Underwood. “Traction control with the right foot. We had to do some changes after the sprint cars ran. The track as a little rough. It started taking a little rubber and slicking off, but it was fast.”

“It wasn’t much basically our dry slick set up. We took some stagger out of the car, moved some weight and played with the air pressure a little. That’s about all we did. It’s a good car. We’ve finally got it dialed in pretty good. My brother owns the car I just drive it and wrench on it. It’s his money so we have to keep it up front”

Abilene, Tx., (May 30th, 2009) The ASCS Lone Star Region Sprint Cars made their inaugural visit to Abilene’s Semi-banked 1/4 mile Saturday night with 24 of the regions cars and stars singing in for their chance for the first ever feature win on the red clay oval. Also on the racing card the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Southern SportMods, IMCA Stock and IMCA Hobby Stocks, with extra money on the line. Pure Stocks and Jr. Mini Stocks filled the remainder of the night’s action.

Allen Aces Modified Main

Lubbock’s Kelly Allen christened his new car with it’s first feature win in the 20-lap IMCA Modified A-main. Allen chased track veteran Mark Paterson throughout the race making a late race pass to grab the lead, then inched away to snag the victory.

The 21-car IMCA Modified main was a little tricky as drivers tried find the track after the ASCS Sprint Car feature. Patterson jumped out to lead on the initial start, but Steve Hayes had problems with yellow quickly back out. On the second try Allen got out front with Tony Wink second, Patterson and David Davis side by side for third. A multi-car tangle in turn 1 would bring the caution back out. Even the third time wasn’t a charm as AJ Vasquez and Bret Bush tangled on the front stretch.

Finally under green, Patterson beat Allen into turn 1 for the lead. Allen then tried to look low under Patterson in turn 4, while Fred Wojtek and Chris Elliott ran wheel to wheel for third. Lap 2 saw Chris Dawson and Tommy Fain made contact with Dawson going around in turn 4. The restart was clean as the field stayed single file, until Fain and Dawson found each other again to bring the yellow out on lap 3.

Allen looked high on Patterson as green waved again and nearly got squeezed into the wall on lap 5 when caution was out for debris. Once back under green, Dillon Smith got along side C. Elliott for fourth, while Wojtek tried to look under Allen for second. More debris brought the yellow back out on lap 6, fortunately the last caution of the race.

Once back under green, C. Elliott tried to take the spot back from Smith as the two young guns battled it out. Wojtek again took a look inside Allen for second on lap 8, but ended up losing third to Smith on lap 9. Coming to the crossed flags it was still Patterson leading the way, Allen, Smith with Wojtek and C. Elliott side by side for fourth. C. Elliott finally secured the spot on lap 12.

Allen got to Patterson’s bumper on lap 14, with Smith closing some on both. Allen was able to get inside Patterson and take over the top spot on lap 16. It didn’t take long for Allen to begin increasing his margin as Patterson fell back to clutches of Smith and C. Elliott. As the white flag waved, Allen was inching further away, while Patterson, Smith and C. Elliott were three wide for second. Allen in the Ogle Transportation, Bingo Concessions, Russ Fletcher Motorsports, Hughes Chassis took it’s inaugural checkers.

“It was a whole lot of luck and being up toward the front,” commented Allen. “The track tonight started off a little heavy. Rob(Poor) probably worked on it a lot for the Sprint Cars tonight. It rutted up a bit, and was a little rough, but it was racey. You could pass tonight and it was a lot of fun.”

“We just set it up as a neutral racecar for the conditions. You need to have it stay free enough, not tighten up and be able to get across the ruts. It was just a lot of luck to hit it all right tonight.”

“We switched from an old Big Dog Chassis that used to be Vince’s(Ogle). It had seen better days. It was a good car and couldn’t have the distinctive set up I have on his one. What I like about the Hughes is that Jason races them three or four nights a week. You can call him up anytime and he’ll guide you in the right direction. These are front running racecars, so I had to try one.”

Abilene, Tx., (Feb 22nd, 2009) The sun shined bright for the final day of Abilene Speedway’s annual Ice Breaker event, with a couple late arrivals, helping fill in for those that had already left. After freezing temperatures Saturday night, the warm sun was a welcome relief for racers and fans, although it made for tricky track conditions. Despite the efforts of Richard Snider and the track prep crew, the afternoon sun quickly baked the track and was the great equalizer of competition.

Ogle out-guns field for Modified main

Lubbock’s Vince Ogle was all but out of Modified racing, selling the car, trailer and all of his equipment, but along the chance to drive again. Like any die hard racer Ogle jumped on that chance. After a Saturday night IMCA Stock car win, Ogle added to his weekend winnings leading flag to flag to take the IMCA Modified main event victory.

Polesitter, Chris Elliott edged out Ogle for the lead at the start of the 20-lap IMCA Modified main, Charles Brewer spun to ring out the yellow. On the second start, Ogle beat the young Elliott into turn 1 and got the lead off of turn 2, while Keith White was sliding high losing several spots. White got a bit of a reprieve when Mark Patterson spun on lap 1 to bring out a yellow. Once back to green Ogle got clear of Elliott, with Chris Dawson getting along side Chad Maurer for fourth. Dawson completed the pass followed by Kelly Allen to fifth.

By lap 5 Ogle and Elliott had put some distance on Richard McDaniel in third. Elliott took a look under Ogle on lap 6, getting along side on front stretch, but Ogle held steady in turn 1. Back in the pack, Saturday night’s winner, Monte Bolton and Tommy Fain were getting past Maurer for sixth and seventh. At the crossed flags it was Ogle, Elliott, McDaniel, Dawson and Allen in the top five spots.

Allen got by Dawson on lap 10 when Dawson slid high, at the same time Elliott was again putting the heat on Ogle for the lead. Cory Colyer brought out the yellow on lap 11 when he rolled to a stop in turn 2. On the restart, Fred Wojtek, Brewer and Kenneth Graves tangled in turn 1 to bring the yellow back out. Once back to green Dawson rooted out Allen for fourth, who fell back to seventh in front of Maurer and White running wheel to wheel for eighth.

Allen continued to fall back position after he slid way too high in turn falling all the way to the back of the pack. The top three had two car lengths separation between themselves, with a gap back to Dawson and Bolton running side by side for fourth. With two to go, Ogle began to open up the advantage over Elliott and took the win in the Fletcher Motorsports, Carburetor Corner, Smith Racing, Hughes Chassis. His first win in Hughes Chassis in only his second time on the track with it.

“A whole of it today was a good starting spot,” replied Ogle. “It was pretty important on that track. It was rubbered up pretty good. I didn’t worry too much. Chris(Elliott) is a good driver(for his age). I drove with him all last year and part of the year before. So he’s not real inexperienced. I just did what I could do. That’s all you can worry about.”

“When you’re out front you have a lot of thoughts going on. I just try to hit my same line every time and keep from sliding the car a whole lot. I just tried to keep it straight and not use up my tires.”

“I had been in Dirt Works cars all of my Modified career. I sold out and was going to quit and this new Hughes is what I ended up with. This chassis suited me good this weekend. I’m gonna run it a few times. It worked good for not being a new car.”

White whips ‘em again

After a Friday night IMCA Modified win, a Saturday night IMCA Sportmod win, some driver may be content, save their equipment and settle for a second place finish. Not Academy’s Keith White. White had work cut out though as he had to chase down early leader, and a former track champion, Josh McGaha. White stayed glued to McGaha’s bumper throughout several restarts, then in a bold move on a tricky track, jumped to the high side taking the lead on lap 12. From there White put it on cruise control as he inched away from McGaha on the way to the checkers.

David Riley was first into turn 1 at the start of the 20-car, 20-lap IMCA SSM main. Mcgaha and Shane Wojtek ran side by side for second until Wojtek slid too high in turn 4. Matt Mueller got sideways, scattering the pack, put everyone found the right direction with no caution needed. McGaha got by Riley for the lead on lap 2, with White getting by for second on lap 3. Scotty Wallace shad a bumper on lap 3 to bring out a quick yellow.

McGaha and White got away on green, with Riley, Wojtek and Gabe Tucker nose to tail for third. Tucker tried outside Wojtek on lap 6, with Chris Meyers trying to fill the low side. Meyers got into Tucker sending him around on lap 7 for a caution. Once back to green it was McGaha and White again pulling out from the field, with Bill Pittaway getting by Brandon Stewart for fourth.

White began working on McGaha on lap 8, but Bradley Poor broke a rear end and leaving Dean Abbey nowhere to go. Abbey careened off Poor and slid through the hot pit exit, where fortunately no one was standing. McGaha got a brief breath as green waved again, but White quickly closed back up. Stewart and Pittaway were side by side for fourth and challenging Riley at the same time. Stewart tapped Riley slightly giving Pittaway the opportunity to get by Riley for third.

Coming to the halfway point it was McGaha, White, Pittaway, Riley and Ronnie Welborn, who snuck past Stewart during the bumper tag. White began ducking under McGaha, but Mcgaha would keep the door closed. Then White looked to the high side on lap 11 and got along side McGaha. White out raced McGaha into the next corner taking over the top spot on lap 12. White then eased away in the Tracey’s Auto Sales, Braka Operating, Tubbs Paint & Body, TCI, All Tex Cabling, Belton Metals, Carroll’s Race Engines, Big Chief Chassis.

“It’s been a real good weekend getting three wins,” said White. “I’m real happy about that, no doubt. I could have asked for more, but that would be pushing it.”

“I didn’t really know for sure if the top was going to work. I tried it getting in(to the corner) a little bit. When you’re behind someone you can try things. It felt like it would work. I figured I needed to try it once anyway. I gave it try once and the caution came out. After that Josh(Mcgaha) moved up a little, so I started working the bottom again. He moved back down, so I went up there again. It was more the middle than the top.”

“With Josh you know he’s drive you clean. He didn’t take up the race track and I knew he would stay in his line. That’s the reason you can drive close to someone like that.”

Wade walks away to I-Stock win

One of Abilene’s favorite drivers, Billy Wade out of San Angelo picked up the Sunday IMCA Car feature win against the tough field. Wade got around early leader Tony Ritterbush after a restart, then held off Ritterbush after another caution, building his lead on the way to the checkers.

Ritterbush grabbed the point on lap 1, with Kevin Opheim, Mike Van Genderen and Willie Free going three wide for seventh. An infield tire kicked on the track to bring out a quick yellow. Once back to green Wade began to pressure Ritterbush for the top spot. Wade had just gotten along side Ritterbush when the red flag waved for a fire under the car of Jason Batt.

On the restart, Wade jumped to the high side and wrestled the lead away on lap 6. Eric Jones moved in on Terry Wojtek on lap 7 as they battled for third. Opheim joined that scrap on lap 8, getting beside Jones on lap 9. At halfway it was Wade, Ritterbush, Wojtek, Jones and Opheim in the top five. Jeremy Gettler and Dustin Locke tangled on lap to bring out a yellow.

When green waved again Opheim slid high, giving Free and Van Genderen an opening to get by, while Jones and Wojtek were side by side for third. With five to go, Wade was increasing his lead over Ritterbush, who now had Jones on his bumper. Jones continued to keep the heat on Ritterbush, with Wojtek, Free and Van Genderen battling for fourth. Jones gave it one last shot on the final lap, but came up short. In the meantime, Wade was cruising on to the win in the Slone Racing Products, Burris Welding, Jeff’s Performance, Wade Chassis.

Kinnaird KO’s Montgomery’s chance for three-peat

After following Allen Montgomery to the checkers on Friday and Saturday night’s, Mansfield’s James Kinnaird took it upon himself to spoil Montgomery’s look for back to back to back wins. Kinnaird used track position to get out front early and build a good lead, while Montgomery was forced to make his way through the front of the pack. Montgomery used lapped traffic to close in at one point, but Kinnaird again ran away once clear and grabbed the win.

As green waved on the field for the 20-lap feature, Kinnaird quickly jumped out front in turn 1, with Matt Drottz, Billy Taylor and Montgomery falling in line. A multi-car tangle in turn 1 brought out yellow on lap 1. Kinnaird got a good jump on the restart, with Montgomery finally getting past Taylor for third on lap 2. Charles Cosper followed in Montgomery’s tracks, taking fourth from Taylor a lap later.

Montgomery got along side Drottz for second on lap 4 and once clear found himself a half straightaway behind Kinnaird. Cosper was able to snag third from Drottz on lap 6. At the halfway point it was Kinnaird being run down by Montgomery, Cosper, Drottz and Taylor. Kinnaird caught lapped traffic with Montgomery closing up, but Montgomery got hung behind a slower car giving Kinnaird the chance to rebuild his lead.

Once clear Montgomery was not able to mount another charge as Kinnaird kept a good margin. Taylor would slide too high and fall back several spots, while Nyle Godwin and Tobie Talk ran side by side for seventh. Dale Roys and Jaron Shahon had simultaneous spins on lap 15, but both kept it going without bringing out a yellow. Kinnaird continued to hold an advantage over Montgomery in the final laps and grabbed the victory in the Big Jims Racing, Wes Machine Shop, Destroyer Chassis.

Abilene, Tx., (Feb. 21st, 2009) The second day of Abilene Speedway’s Ice Breaker saw 10-12 new arrivals sing in for the IMCA classes, along with the 305 Sprint Cars. The new entries upped the total on state count by two, with one driver all the way from Michigan.

The 305 Sprint Cars were a mix of the West Texas Sprint Series(WTSS) and Sprint Series of Texas(SST). A good field of 17 winged warriors added to the total car count, along with excitement for the fans who were huddled together as temperatures began to dip below the freezing mark.

Peebles pounds Sprint Car field
Lubbock’s Preston Peebles wasted little time getting to the front of the 305 Sprint Car main event. Peebles grabbed the lead from Josh Hawkins on lap 2 and proceeded to put the rest of the field in his wake going unchallenged to the checkers in a race cut to 15 laps after a slew ow of early cautions.

At the drop of the green, Hawkins was first into turn 1 for the early lead followed by Peebles, Gary Floyd and Brandon Howle. Lap 1 saw lots of action starting when Dennis Smith got into the back stretch wall. On the restart, the middle of the pack stacked up leaving Marty Stanford stopped in turn 2. On the next try Howle and Kolt Walker tangled collecting Tim Ridgeway. The third attempt had Walker and Brian Holland get hooked together in turn 1 for another yellow.

Finally back under green Peebles jumped up to the high side ad sailed past Hawkins for the lead on lap 2. The top four of Peebles, Hawkins, Floyd and Curt Barnett separated themselves out leaving Jerry Graves, Leighton Crouch and Josh Baughman battling for fifth. Peebles was quickly into traffic on lap 6 nearly getting clipped on the front straight.

In traffic, Floyd was able to reel in Hawkins near the halfway point, with Peebles holding nearly a half track lead, with Barnett and Crouch rounding out the top five. Floyd used lapped cars to work his way around Hawkins for second on lap 12, but Peebles was nowhere in sight. Peebles cruised on to the victory in th Allstar Conversions, Allstar Automotive & Tire, Dick Sweat ASI Race Engines, Maxim Chassis.

Bolton best for Modified main win
Racing in memory of his son Justin, Lubbock’s Monte Bolton led all 20 laps of the IMCA Modified A-main. Bolton’s flag to flag run wasn’t as veteran Bob Sikes kept the pressure on throughout the race. Sikes tried high, low and on the bumper of Bolton, but to no avail as Bolton held steady as a rock for the win.

When green waved on the 20-lap event, Bolton quickly jumped out front with Sikes second and Steve Hayes moving up to third. In the pack it was three wide in the scramble for seventh before things sorted out. Sikes took his first look for the lead on lap 2 trying the bottom side. By lap 2 the top 3 has eased away from David Davis, Brian Flowers and Chris Dawson battling for fourth, while Robbie Edwards and Josh McGaha were side by side for seventh.

Davis and Flowers were wheel to wheel for fourth on lap 6, while Edwards was still along side McGaha. Dawson saw his top five run end on lap 8 when he slowed and was unable to exit the track. Once back under green, Bolton, Sikes and Hayes stayed nose to tail, with McGaha and Flowers side by side for fifth and last night’s winner, Keith White moving up to eighth.

Sikes was continuing to look for a way around Bolton, but at the same time trying to fend off Hayes. Edwards picked off another spot getting by Flowers for sixth. At the crossed flags it was Bolton, Sikes, Hayes, Davis and McGaha in the top five spots. McGaha lost fifth to Edwards on lap 10, who then began to look under Davis on lap 11. Flowers and McGaha made contact fighting for the spot that caused Flowers t spin with a flat collecting Jeff Emerson on lap 13.

On the restart, Edwards continued his charge getting by Davis for fourth and looking under Hayes. Sikes tok a pek inside Bolton on lap 15, while Dillon Smith got back by White. Edwards got by Hayes for third on lap 16, while McGaha took fifth from Davis. Sikes got the bumper of Bolton on lap 17, as Edwards now put the heat on for second.

Edwards run to the front ended in a shower of sparks when he pounded the back stretch wall trying the high side of Sikes. Once back to green McGaha got around Hayes for third, while Bolton got a little breathing room on Sikes. On the final lap Bolton was able to finally shake off Sikes running on to the checkers in the Braka Operating , Sidebiter Chassis powered with a Cottle Race Engine.

“This one is for Justin,” said Bolton as he donned his son’s ski cap in Victory Lane. “To get the win for him is always special. After every race if we didn’t win he’d ask me what the problem was? Can you fix it, can you win? So any time we win I know he’s smiling at us with his arm raised up in the air. That was his sign for a win. Every time we win something, it’s very special. Our whole race deal is a family thing. We just try to have a good time and enjoy ourselves.”

“My starting position was one key. If you start up front it’s hard for them to pass. On the second race day, the track usually gets slick all over. The Sprint Cars all pretty much ran one groove around the bottom so it rubbered it up. It was a good racey track though.”

“I have to thank the guys behind me for not roughing me up too much trying to get by. In the back of your mind you know who’s behind you, but you just try to focus on hitting your marks. Just be as consistent as you can. I had some car issues of my own, so I had my hands full all night.”

Wiley White wins again

Looking to defend his 2008 IMCA Southern Sportmod title, the three time champ Keith White took the first of the IMCA Sportmod Regional races. White got tracked early leader Danny Hogue and made a high side move to get the top spot on lap 15. From there White inched away from Hogue and the rest of the field to take the checkers.

Hogue jumped out front on green, but Jeff Turner and Tommy Fain got tangled in mid-pack to bring out the caution. Hogue repeated the move on the second start, with White getting by Chris Meyers for second. The top five quickly sorted out single file, with Turner and Bill Pittaway side by side for seventh. Pittaway finally secured the spot on lap 5, with White now turning up the eat on Hogue.

White tried the high side on lap 7, but Hogue slammed the door. Turner took sixth from Pittaway on lap 8, after Josh McGaha began to fade. At halfway the top five were Hogue, White, Myers, Justin Shaw and Gabe Tucker. White again looked high on lap 11, but backed off when the back stretch wall came up.

White regrouped for another charge on lap 14 and shot by Hogue coming out of turn 2 to take the lead on lap 15. Just as Tucker was making a move on Shaw for fourth, Tyler Fain spun to bring out a yellow on lap 16. Everyone got away clean on the restart with White easing away from Hogue. At the checkers it was White by a comfortable margin in the Traceys Auto Sales, Braka Operating, All Tex Cabling, Tubbs Paint & Body, TCI, Belton Metals, Carroll’s Race Engines, Big Chief Chassis.

“This made up for Friday night,” stated White. “It definitely paid more. I don’t think the track owed us one, flats happen. It was a good race. Danny Hogue and I had a good hard fought race. It was fun. We talked about it again this morning and they had as good of time as I did. You can’t beat that.”

“I picked the only spot you could really pass on. I knew it was tight up there. I smacked the wall in the same spot with my Modified. We hung bumpers a couple times and I had to drive it to the right to get off him. I thought the Sprint Car would tighten up the track more. I ran the B-main in the Modified and it was tighter than the Sportmod feature.”

“A double on Sunday would be good. It would be nice with two(wins) in each class. That’s probably high hopes, but we came here to win.”

Ogle outlasts I-Stock field
Veteran Modified driver Vince Ogle missed making the main by one spot, but made up for it as the Lubbock pilot took it out on the IMCA Stock Car field. Ogle led flag to flag surviving challenges from several drivers along with three wide action.

The 20-lap I-Stock main started with Matt Guillaume, Ogle and Jeremy Gettler going three wide for the lead with Ogle coming out on top. As that battle settled down, Billy Wade and TJ Wilson were side by side for fourth. As the top three continued to run nose to tail, with Gettler taking a look inside on lap 4. Jason Batt spun in tun 4, while Eric Jones rolled to a stop on the back stretch to bring out the yellow.

Kevin Opheim made a big move on the restart, but got into Guillaume on lap sending him around. Guillaume was able to keep rolling, but Opheim began to fade with flat separating the field. This left Ogle with a good lead over Gettler and Wilson, who had a gap back to Duain Pritchett and Dustin Locke at the mid point of the race.

Wilson battled to get around Gettler getting by on lap 12 while Pritchett closed on Gettler. Wilson caught Ogle for the lead and took a look inside on lap 14, but was not able to complete the pass. The lead quartet caught traffic on lap 15 with Ogle getting through clean. Wilson got hung up with the lapped car of Wayne Stremmel sending them both around. Wilson never stopped, but Stremmel was unable to go bringing out a caution.

With the yellow charged to Stremmel, Wilson got his spot back for the restart and as green waved again Ogle, Wilson and Gettler were three wide for the lead. Ogle and Wilson traded some paint with Wilson ending up on the back stretch wall to bring the caution back out.

Once back to green Ogle had Gettler again taking a look inside for the lead. Gettler also had Pritchett to deal with as Pritchett was trying to top groove looking for second. Gettler gave it his best shot on the last lap but slid high off turn 1 loosing numerous spots. As Pritchett and Locke ran door to door for second, Ogle in a car owned by Earl Johnson and sponsored by Fletcher Motorsports, Carburetor Corner, was taking the surprise win.

“The owner(Earl Johnson) does a good job on the car and keeps in going,” replied Ogle. “I knew after the Modified race that you could make it work through the middle. If I just ran up towards the top they might under me going in, but I could hold them off coming out(of the corner). Earl will get over and get a wrench on it if I tell what I need”

“I was pretty worried about that three wide restart. The track is kind of narrow to go three wide. It all came out good for me.”

Montgomery masters Hobby Stock field again
Proving Friday night was no fluke, Ft. Worth’s Allen Montgomery again showed the 20-car IMCA Hobby Stock field nothing but his rear bumper. Picking of where he left off, Montgomery grabbed the point on lap 1 and never looked back. James Kinniard made a run at Montgomery on the final lap but came up short giving Montgomery the back to back wins.

When green waved at the start of the 20 lapper, Montgomery beat Colby Deming into turn 1 for the lead. David Bissonette got pas Deming on lap 2 for second. The top five singled themselves out with Bryan Sewell and Andy Roller door to door for sixth. Kinniard got along side Deming on lap 6 and took third. Tobie Talk brought out the caution on lap 7 when he spun in turn 4.

On the restart Bissonette took a quick look on Montgomery, with Kinniard and Deming again side by side and Sewell getting around Charles Cosper for fifth. Coming to the midway point it was Montgomery, Bissonette, Kinniard, Deming and Sewell in the top five. Deming would slap and nearly climb the back stretch wall on lap 10 ending is top five run.

Shortly after green waved again Kinniard made a move on Bissonette getting along side on lap 15. Sewell closed in on that duo almost going three wide on lap 16. This gave Montgomery the chance to put some distance on the trio. Kinniard got by Bissonette on lap 17 and went on a charge for the leader. Kinniard caught Montgomery as the white flag waved but came up a little short as Montgomery in the Ace Tire Service, Extreme Graphics, Texas Star Racing, Matt’s Repair, Destroyer Chassis took the back to back win.

“Tonight was just mainly luck,” said Montgomery. “I drew number one and just held on to it. The car wasn’t working as good as it was last night. It was fast enough I guess. I was able to stay up there. The track rubbered up a lot more than I thought. I had it too tight and it wouldn’t turn in the center of the corner.”

“All I hope for is a top four every night. To sweep the weekend, that would be great. Two years ago I won 13 races, last year I didn’t win any. You never know when your last one will be so you make the best out of every one you get.”
