That would most [...]

National Tour Returns To Texas Track For ‘Lone Star 50′ On Fri., March 26

HIGHLANDS, TX – March 9, 2010 – What’s the biggest selling point Battleground Speedway owner Mike Walling has going for him leading into his track’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Lone Star 50′ on Fri., March 26?

That would most certainly be last year’s inaugural appearance by the national full-fender tour at the three-eighths-mile oval located 12 miles east of Houston.

“It was an awesome show,” raved Walling, a 35-year-old Texan now in his second year at the helm of Battleground Speedway. “People around here are still talking about, so all that word-of-mouth is my best advertising. It was the definitely the kind of race that makes people want to come back this year and bring some friends this time.”

Indeed, the 2009 WoO LMS program served as a grand coming-out party for the high-banked track, which Walling reopened last year after it had sat dormant for nearly three seasons. Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., emerged victorious in a hard-fought, high-energy A-Main that saw cars jockeying for position throughout the 100-lap distance — and immediately after the checkered flag fell, Babb donned a cowboy hat and happily hopped on a 1,300-pound Texas Longhorn steer as part of a unique, Lone Star State-themed Victory Lane ceremony that had the big crowd buzzing.

“The best Late Model drivers in the country were racing all over the track from the first lap to the 100th lap last year,” said Walling, who was so pumped up after Battleground’s ’09 WoO LMS spectacular that he offered free admission to all the fans who returned for the track’s regular racing program the following week. “Darrell Lanigan (the 2008 WoO LMS champion from Union, Ky.) went to the back (of the field) twice and still finished second — that’s how racy the track was. It was the show of the year at Battleground Speedway.”

The return engagement for the nation’s premier dirt Late Model tour will pack all the punch of last year’s two-day, extra-distance event into one frenzied evening on March 26. A 50-lap A-Main paying $10,000 to win will headline Battleground’s card this year, allowing the WoO LMS to contest a first-ever two-track Texas doubleheader by moving about 200 miles north on Sat., March 27, to Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore.

And of course, Walling is once again planning to punctuate the night by having the ‘Lone Star 50′ winner meet up with a snorting Texas Longhorn in Victory Lane. The steer that starred in last year’s post-race ceremonies, Hondo, was tragically killed late in 2009 in a highway accident, but Walling is arranging to have another Longhorn brought in to continue building the tradition.

“Nobody left the stands after last year’s race when they saw that big Longhorn come out of the pits and start walking down the homestretch,” said Walling, whose uncle, Red Walling, was involved in local racing in the past with the former Big H Speedway dirt track in Houston and now assists in the marketing and operation of the new-look Battleground Speedway. “It was a pretty neat deal, especially when Shannon went over and gave it a kiss on the head. The crowd really got into it and I want to keep it going as something everyone can look forward to when the World of Outlaws come to town.”

The scrum to get up-close-and-personal with a Longhorn will feature a talent-laden roster of WoO LMS regulars led by defending champion Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who finished fourth in last year’s event at Battleground on the eve of his 21st birthday. He won last month’s 2010 WoO LMS season opener at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. — the fourth consecutive year he’s captured the tour’s lidlifter.

Other committed Outlaw travelers ready for action in Texas include Lanigan (last year’s crowd-pleasing runner-up at Battleground); Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa. (finished fifth in the 2009 event); Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y. (sixth); Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga. (seventh); Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga. (eighth); current points leader Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis. (10th); 2009 Rookie of the Year Russell King of Bristolville, Ohio (13th); Rick Eckert of York, Pa. (19th); 2007 champion Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky. (23rd); and 2010 Rookie of the Year candidate Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del. (did not enter last year’s race).

Several other racers will trek to Battleground in hopes of building momentum to join the established Outlaws as 2010 regulars, including 2006 champion Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., rookie candidates Tim Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., Tony Knowles of Tyrone, Ga., and Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and ’09 rookie contender Brent Robinson of Smithfield, Va.

Among the drivers expected to challenge the Outlaws are Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, who finished third in last year’s event; Al Purkey of Coffeyville, Kans. (11th in ’09) and his car owner Bill Koons of Omaha, Neb. (DNQ); Ray Moore of Shreveport, La. (ninth); Kevin Sitton of Baytown, Texas (22nd); and Chris Brown of Cleveland, Texas (DNQ).

The ‘Lone Star 50′ is currently the lone dirt Late Model event scheduled at Battleground in 2010.

“We’re telling all the local fans to come out and catch the Late Models while they can,” said Walling, whose track headlines open-wheel Modifieds on Saturday nights. “This is their only chance to see them at Battleground this year, so it’s definitely a show not to be missed.”

Gates are scheduled to open at 4 p.m. and racing will begin at 7 p.m. on March 26.

General admission is $32 and pit passes cost $38 for the program, which also includes racing for the track’s Limited Modified, Hobby Stock and Pure Stock classes.

For more information on Battleground Speedway, call the track at 832-421-RACE or visit www.battlegroundspeedway.net.

Additional info on the WoO LMS is available by visiting www.worldofoutlaws.com.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series is brought to fans across the country by many important sponsors and partners, including Arizona Sport Shirts (Official Apparel Company), Armor All (Official Car Care Products), Hoosier Racing Tires (Official Racing Tires), STP (Official Fuel Treatment), SuperClean (Official Cleaner-Degreaser), VP Racing (Official Racing Fuel) and DirtonDirt.com (Hard Charger Award); in addition to contingency sponsors Eibach Springs, Integra Shocks, MSD Ignition, Ohlins Shocks, Pink Carburetors, Pro Power Engines, Quartermaster, Rocket Chassis and Wrisco Aluminum.

Lonnie Wheatley, HIGHLANDS, Texas (March 6, 2010) – Missouri rivals Brian Brown and Jesse Hockett hooked up in an epic duel along the Gulf Coast Saturday night as Sprint Cars returned to the 3/8-mile Battleground Speedway for the first time in nearly ten years.

And, when the checkered flag flew upon the Third Annual Gulf Coast Nationals, it was Brown coming away with the $3,000 winner’s share in the capper of season-opening weekend competition for the ASCS Gulf South Region.

After trading the top spot a handful of times over the final ten circuits, Brown held the point the final two times around in the scheduled 25-lapper to take the win aboard the FVP No. 21 Maxim entry.

“Jesse and I have had a lot of good battles, it’s a lot of fun to race with him like that,” Brown commented in victory lane.

Had it not been for a late-race caution, eleventh-starting Oklahoma shoe Brady Bacon may very well have played the role of spoiler.

“I really should probably thank Brady for that one,” Brown explained. “I kept pounding the cushion and then he showed the low side just when that caution came out, that made all the difference.”

Gridding the main event outside row two, Brown chased pole starter Wayne Johnson and second-starter Hockett in the early rounds.

Hockett and Johnson diced for the point until “The Rocket” took command on the fifth round. Johnson’s run aboard a former Jason Johnson mount now owned by Joe Zierolf was cut short when a power steering line blew ten laps in.

Johnson’s misfortune nearly proved disastrous for Brown as well, with contact in turn four as Johnson checked up. “I hit him, I was lucky my race didn’t end right there,” Brown surmised.

Back under way, Brown kept the pressure on Hockett’s Don Ott-powered VKCC Motorsports No. 75 A.R.T. as Bacon and Tony Bruce, Jr., mixed it up for third.

Brown slipped by Hockett for the official lead on the 18th lap, with Hockett returning the favor a lap later. As the lead duo made another couple or so unofficial lead changes in the corners, Bacon broke free from Bruce and was about to dispose of Brown for second when a caution flew for Channin Tankersley’s stalled mount.

With Bacon’s hand tipped, Brown raced to the low side and ultimately battled past Hockett to post a narrow win.

A disappointed Hockett settled for runner-up honors, commenting that, “I never even saw the white flag. My hat’s off to Brian though, he did a good job.”

Bacon settled for third in the Tel-Star Communications No. 99 Triple-X, with Bruce, Jr., and 19th-starter Travis Rilat rounding out the top five.

Tommy Bryant was sixth, with Ray Allen Kulhanek in seventh. The night’s top passing points earner in heat race action, Ricky Logan returned from an opening lap stop on the track to claim eighth with Eric Baldaccini and Aaron Reutzel completing the top ten.

After Logan’s stop on the initial start of the feature, Klint Angelette, Scottie McDonald, Travis Knighton and Travis Elliott were eliminated in a wild turn four skirmish on the second try.

Brandon Berryman, Wayne Johnson, Hockett and Bryant topped heat race action for Saturday night’s 34-car field, with Travis Rilat winning the “B” Main.

Kennedale, Texas (March 5, 2010) – The O’Reilly/National Championship Racing Association kicked off its 40th anniversary season with the series’ modified south division getting things started as they made their first ever appearance at the ‘lil quarter mile clay oval of Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, Texas with the sanctioning of the tracks annual February Fast 50 here Friday night. After Friday nights three qualifiers were complete it was John Allen, Clyde Dunn, Jr. and Tim Clonch who took home the fifteen lap feature victories and guaranteed themselves a spot in Saturday nights $2,000 to win feature finale.

Jacob Pirkle of Venus, Texas started on the front row with Jay Sale of Edmond, Oklahoma along side as the field went green with Sale taking the early lead on the first lap. It was short lived, however, as Pirkle took over the top spot coming out of turn two on lap two. One lap later saw Allen, who started third, make his way past Sale for the third position and used the bottom side of the track to begin working his way up to challenge the leader as Pirkle found the top side to his liking.

It stayed nose to tail for several laps before the first and only caution of the race fell on lap seven when Sale went for a spin in turn two.

On the restart it was Pirkle, followed by Allen, Ronny Sigmon, Thomas Tillison, Jr. and Gene Weaver as the two front runners began distancing themselves from the rest of the field.

Tenth starting C.A. Nix began working his way up to the front and by lap ten had worked his way up to the fourth position and began to battle Sigmon for the third position.

But back up front Allen, aboard the David Harrison owned Hughes Racing Chassis began pressuring the leader with two laps to go. Coming down to take the white flag lap, Allen snuck around Pirkle entering turns one and two and out ran him down the back stretch and entering turn three, took advantage of Pirkles slight bobble to secure the three car length victory at the line.

“The top felt better but I thought I could get a good run down on the bottom but just couldn’t get it done down there,” said the former three time series modified north champion. “Once we got up high up there in turn one I felt pretty good from there.”

Sigmon also got around Pirkle on his last lap bobble to finish second while Nix came home fourth and the final automatic transfer spot into Saturday nights feature finale.

In the second qualifying feature it was all Dunn as he took off from his inside front row starting position and wired the field as the feature went caution free. Allen Chickering came home second, a half stretch behind Dunn, while Chad Davis and George White took the four transfer positions into Saturday night.

“I felt very comfortable up there at the top and where I was out on the track,” said done afterwards. “I could kinda see where everybody was so I wasn’t really worried about anybody catching me. I want to thank my dad and crew, Bobby Malchus, Kevin Rowland and Brett Gee as they had this Skyrocket Chassis working great.”

Clonch and Jarod Webb started on the front row for the third and final qualifier with Webb taking the early lead as the green flag fell. One lap was able to be completed before the first of two caution flags of the feature fell when Colt Goodman went for a spin in turn three.

On the restart Webb took off and quickly opened a five car length advantage over Clonch while behind them, Terry Pritchett, Kevin Clement and Patrick Daniels waged battle for the fourth and final automatic transfer position.

Just past the halfway point Clonch, fresh off his victory at the Dirt Track World Championships at Texas Motor Speedway just six days earlier, got a run around Webb exiting turn two and took the lead down the backstretch entering turn three. Clonch looked to be on his way to an easy victory but with two laps to go the final caution of the race fell when Michael McCleskey went for a spin in turn three. During the caution, mechanical gremlins struck Webb causing him to retire from the race and Pritchett inheriting the runner up position.

On the final restart there was no catching Clonch as he led the final two laps unchallenged to take the victory. “I should have heated up my tires earlier because they started off cold and after the first five laps they began to heat up,” said Clonch later. But besides catching Webb, the victor had other concerns. “We lost our right side body panel there and broke a radius rod so I was kinda worried about that. I just wanted to make sure we won this thing so we could get a good starting position for tomorrow night.”

Pritchett held on for second while Daniels and Clement held off a hard charging Mike Dillard the last two laps to secure the final transfer positions.

The eight lap heat races for the 46 car field were won by Pirkle, Dunn, Clonch and Sale.

Don’t forget that Saturday nights championship races get underway at 4:00 PM with the modified south drivers running “B” features to qualify for the twenty-four car feature finale.

ODESSA, Texas (March 2) – The new promoter at Champion Motor Speedway has asphalt in his background and a fondness for dirt.

Scott Holland takes over the reins at Odessa, where Saturday night shows will feature IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMods.

“There was a time when you couldn’t have gotten me to a dirt track race,” admitted Holland, former boss at the ½-mile paved San Antonio Speedway. “Then I went to one at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco and now you can’t keep me away.”

With daughter Ivy Jean now enrolled in The Art Institute of Austin, Holland decided this opportunity was the right one to get back in the business and accepted the Champion post after meeting with track owner Murray Erickson.

“We’re creating and perfecting a base to operate from this season. We need to get our car counts up and make sure our track officials are very good before we hold any big events,” he said. “If we’re building an engine, then we’re still work¬ing on the block.”

“Last year we averaged 88 cars running every other week,” Holland added. “We will race every week this year and I’m very, very encouraged. It seems like there are drivers coming out of the woodwork to race.”

Opening night at the ¼-mile buffalo wallow clay course is April 3. Point races are scheduled through Sept. 4.

Champion is part of the ButlerBuilt South Central Region for Modifieds and the Stephenville Starter Southern Re¬gions for Stock Cars and for Hobby Stocks.

“Standardization is the biggest advantage with IMCA. Guys can load up and race just about wherever. They can run the same car year after year after year and that reduces their cost,” said Holland. ”IMCA doesn’t change their rules very often and when they do, the changes are very well thought out. I’m a big believer that the best change can be no change at all.”

That’s not the case when Holland compares publicizing events in the 1990s and doing so today.

“There’s like a night and day contrast promoting then and promoting now, because of the track website and the Inter¬net,” he said. “I can remember sending out 10,000 pieces of mail in a single mailing before. Now, advertising is almost free because of the Internet, email and texting. All it takes is the touch of a button.”

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 1, 2010) – The American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region kicks off its ninth year of competition with a pair of $3,000-to-win events this weekend in southeast Texas.

On Friday night, the series fires to 2010 life at Beaumont’s Golden Triangle Raceway Park with the Prelude to the Gulf Coast Nationals. Then, on Saturday night, it’s on to Highlands’ Battleground Speedway for the Third Annual Gulf Coast Nationals.

The pair of 3/8-mile ovals makes for an interesting opening weekend combination for the Gulf South forces. While the high-banked Golden Triangle Raceway Park gumbo clay oval has been a regular stop on the Gulf South Regional trail in recent years, the high-banked Battleground Speedway dirt oval hosts the series for the first time on Saturday night.

Golden Triangle Raceway Park has been the site of at least a pair of ASCS Gulf South events each year since 2004. And, while 2008 Lucas Oil Sprint Car National Champion Jason Johnson of Eunice, LA, has enjoyed the most success with six triumphs in the 28 Gulf South events contested at GTRP, four-time Lucas Oil champ Gary Wright was the only driver to post a pair of wins in seven Beaumont outings last year. While Wright scored twice, including a win in the Prelude to the Gulf Coast Nationals, other 2009 winners at GTRP included Johnson, Channin Tankersley, Aaron Reutzel, Travis Rilat and Tommy Bryant.

While the Gulf South forces will be at the advantage in terms of familiarity at Golden Triangle, Battleground will be an entirely different beast as it has been nearly ten years since winged sprint cars have slung the dirt at the Highlands oval that hosts the Gulf Coast Nationals for the first time as well.

Nebraska’s Jack Dover captured the inaugural rendition of the Gulf Coast Nationals at Houston Raceway Park in 2008, with Texan Gary Wright reigning as Gulf Coast Nationals champion after topping the event at Cleveland’s 105 Motor Speedway in 2009.

Nineteen-year-old Aaron Reutzel of Clute, TX, home of the annual Great Texas Mosquito Festival, is the reigning ASCS Gulf South champion. However, with both Reutzel and 2009 series runner-up Channin Tankersley (also 19) both reportedly shifting to the Lucas Oil National Sprint Car trail in 2010, the door could be wide open for a new Gulf South champion in 2010.

The Gulf South forces, expected to include the likes of two-time champ Brandon Berryman and one-time champions Ray Allen Kulhanek and Gary Watson along with Gulf South Iron Man Greg Rilat, Tommy Bryant, Klint Angelette and Bruce Griffith, Jr., among others, will likely take on a number of invaders over the weekend.

Along with last weekend’s East Bay competition, several Lucas Oil ASCS National contenders will also use this weekend as a “Spring Training” of sorts in preparation for the Lucas Oil National season opener at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, on March 19-20.

Texas shoes Gary Wright and Travis Rilat were among at least seven Lucas Oil contenders that competed in Florida’s East Bay events this past weekend. Others included Jesse Hockett, Tony Bruce, Jr., Darren Long, Joe Ramaker and Michael Dupuy. Several of those and others could make their way to southeast Texas for this weekend’s action.

Friday’s racing action at Golden Triangle Raceway Park goes green at 7:45 p.m., while Saturday’s card at Battleground Speedway fires off at 7:00 p.m.

Golden Triangle Raceway Park is located 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90 near Beaumont, TX. For more information, contact the track at 409-752-7200.

Highlands’ Battleground Speedway is located east of Houston off I-10 exit 787, then four miles north. For more information, contact the track at 832-421-7223.

The ASCS Gulf South Region is set for 27 nights of racing action at ten different tracks throughout Texas in 2010.

In its 19th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing, the American Sprint Car Series brings the best of Sprint Car racing to approximately 100 different tracks throughout 30 states and Canada. Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of eleven different Regions throughout the nation.

The full-blown midgets will compete for $1,000 to win on Friday and $3,000 to win on Saturday. Each of their feature events will start 24 cars. The midget portion of the weekend is sanctioned by SMRS/USAC.

The race in 2009 also resulted in the largest field of midgets in the state of Texas in recent memory, as over 40 teams assembled. There are currently 38 midgets registered to compete.

The ASCS2 Series will be on hand to kick off their 2010 season with the Winged Outlaw ‘Multi’ and Non-Winged ‘A’ classes (of what Cowtown fans know as the Winged 600’s, just without wings). With $1,500 earmarked to win for each ASCS2 division, there’s sure to be full fields of top quality cars from throughout the region, as was the case with both ASCS2 events at Cowtown in 2009.

Plus, the first ever visit of the ASCS2 Restricted 600’s will take to the brand new 1/6 mile “Action Track” at Cowtown, with the winner taking home a cool $1,000.

The always exciting Cowtown Modifieds will race their traditional Fast 50 for $2,000 to win and $400 to start (24th). The race will be sanctioned by NCRA, and this is also their season point’s opener. Visit http://www.NCRAracing.org for more info. This is the first ever visit of NCRA modifieds to Cowtown Speedway.

With over $60,000 cash posted for the weekend, fans can expect another great field of cars. Discounted race pre-entry and reserved pit parking space requests are now concluded. Teams can enter at the track on race night and their rigs will be parked by track officials as they see best fit due to the large field of cars entered.

Race fans, you can enjoy the entire weekend’s action by purchasing your 2-day tickets in advance at the track website by 3/4/10 (Thursday). 2-day adult grandstand passes are just $30, a savings of $5 off of race night pricing.

And the extremely popular “Fan Fest” returns to Cowtown Speedway on Saturday, March 6 from Noon until 1:15pm. Ticket holders for that day’s race will be allowed into the pit area during that time to meet with the race teams, get autographs, apparel, pictures and much more. The main ticket booth will be open at noon as well.

An open practice night for all weekend competing race divisions (only) will be held on Thursday March 4 from 5pm-9pm. Concessions and fuel will be available, and pit passes are $20. (The main grandstand will be closed.) Registered drivers are also urged to pick up their registration pay card on practice night to save them time on Friday night of not having to wait in line.
