Park City, Kansas – April 2, 2011 – Series rookie contender Brandon Smith of Amarillo, Texas made the long haul and his first ever visit to 81 Speedway a positive one as he claimed the season opener for the Bob Howard PDC and Mopar National Championship Racing Association presented by Smiley’s Racing Products southern sport modified feature finale Saturday night before a capacity crowd.

Although the Triple B Oil Field Services rookie of the year contender started on the pole for the fifteen lap feature and led every lap, it wasn’t without race long challenges from defending series champion Todd Decker as the Edmond, Oklahoma driver used his Panhandle Performance powered Biscuit Built chassis to move into the runner up position from his fourth starting position.

Smith would hold a five car length advantage over Decker for the first couple of laps before the first and only caution of the feature fell when Donnie McConnell, Greg Deterding, rookie contender Zachery Tippett and Tim Ford got together in turn two.

The restart saw Smith continue to set a somewhat comfortable pace while behind him the battle for the runner up position waged with Decker having his hands full with Kelly Cross as the double file restart behind the leader saw both drivers battle side by side for position. Cross’ strong run up front would come to a quick end as he and another driver made contact down the front stretch causing the Amarillo driver to exit the race track while still under green flag conditions.

On lap five it was fellow Triple B Oil Field Services rookie of the year contender Kinzer Edwards turn to join the mix as he got around fourth running Frank Graven and made his challenge for the runner up position.

At the races midway point it was still Smith, followed by Decker, Edwards and inaugural series champion Chad McNamara of Blackwell, Oklahoma, who had worked his way up from his eighth starting position.

Those four drivers would pull away from the rest of the field during the final five laps and with two laps to go, Decker finally freed himself to settle unchallenged in the runner up position and pressure Smith for the lead. But in the end it was Smith as he held on to take his first career series victory by two car lengths.

Edwards claimed the third position as he got around McNamara and Graven, who both finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Graven, Cross and Smith picked up the three heat race victories while Ford wired the field to take “B” feature honors.

The tour will take a week off before hitting the road for a weekend double header on April 15th and 16th as they make their first and only appearance of the season at the half mile Fairgrounds oval at Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee, Oklahoma. From there they will head east on I-40 and Van Buren, Arkansas and the series first ever appearance at Crawford County Speedway.

Officials with the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Smiley’s Racing Products would like to thank the following partners and contingency sponsors for the southern sport modified division on their 2011 race season.

Official Partners: Park City, Kansas, Smiley’s Racing Products, Bob Howard Part Distribution Center (PDC) and Mopar, Triple B Oil Field Services out of Elk City, Oklahoma and Western Flyer Sport Mod Chassis

By J M Hallas

Fort Worth, Tx.(March 4th, 2011) The 4/10 mile semi-banked dirt oval at Texas Motor speedway played host to its annual Texas World Dirt Track Championships. Over 200 Modifieds and Limited Modifieds took to the track Friday night in search of the seven qualifying spots that would lock them in to Saturday nights big championship events. Drivers and teams from seven states signed in including two drivers from as far away as Pennsylvania.

Drivers would qualify through heat races taking the top sixteen in passing points to the A-Qualifier. C-mains and B-mains would be run to fill the remaining spots in each of the qualifiers.

Allen Aces Modified Main
Midlothian’s Chase Allen earned the top spot in Friday nights A-Qualifier going wire to wire for the win. C. Allen out gunned polesitter Clyde Dunn jr. to grab the lead at the start of the 15-lap main event. C. Allen had things going his way until the final laps when Terry Phillips, who came out of the B-main, ran him down using the high side. Phillips gave it the ol’ college try on the final lap, but settled for the second transfer spot.

As green waved on the 23-car field C. Allen came out of turn 2 with the lead followed by Dunn, Jason Teague, Dennie Gieber and Dee Gossett. A mid pack tangle saw several cars involved, but all continued on without caution. But parts on the track brought out an early caution on lap 2. On the restart C. Allen got a good jump on Dunn, who had a slight advantage over Teague and Gieber.

As the top five sorted out, John Whittington got by Steve Whiteaker jr for sixth. Whiteaker gave up the transfer spot to Phillips on lap 4 as he sailed by on the top side. Gieber got under Teague on lap 5 for third while Whittington and Phillips were side by side for sixth. Robert Metz brought out a yellow on lap 7 when he spun in turn 2.

Once back to green Phillips used the bottom to get by Gossett for fifth, with Whittington trying the top to grab sixth. At halfway it was C. Allen, Dunn, Gieber, Phillips and Teague, who lost fourth to the charging Phillips. Eric Tomlinson was next to loop it in turn 2 for lap 8 caution. As green waved again Phillips was back up top going around Gieber.

Showing his car would work high or low Phillips then dove under Dunn for second as Whittington took fourth from Gieber. Whittington then picked off Dunn leaving him wheel to wheel with Gieber who got the position a lap later. Phillips closed on C. Allen with two to go and the battle was on. As the white waved Phillips went high and gave C. Allen his best shot, but came up a bit short. Behind C. Allen and Phillips, Whittington, Gieber, Dunn, Teague and Cody Smith grabbed the remaining transfer spots.

A pole dash on Saturday will set the top seven starting spots for the 40-lap Championship event.

White, who took a Modified championship win in 2008, got by early leader Rodney Sanders on lap 2. From there White eased away from the 24-car field going unchallenged to the checkers.

Sanders grabbed the point coming out of turn 2 to lead the 15-lap trailed by White, Danny Hebert, Nick Shenberger and Derek Grigsby. White used the bottom to get by Sanders on lap 2, with Grigsby moving into third. Grigsby then pressured Sanders for second, while Steve Whiteaker jr got by Shenberger and Tommy Davis jr for fifth.

Shenberger then spun from his qualifying spot on lap 5 for the races only caution. On the restart the top three got away clean with Whiteaker getting inside D. Hebert for fourth. Whiteaker then picked off another position snagging third from Sanders. At halfway it was White, Grigsby, Whiteaker, Sanders and D. Hebert in the top five.

Back in the pack a former double class winner, Troy Taylor was pulling Sean Jones through traffic as they worked their way until had trouble and fell out.
Killeen, Tx.,(March 6th, 2010) Venerable old Texas Thunder Speedway kicked off it’s 2010 racing season with a new look and new promoter. David Goode took over the reins from former promoter Pat Wilson with his first endevour into running a race track. Goode, a former TTS racer himself still has a son and daughter in the IMCA Modified and Southern Sportmod classes.

“It’s pretty much like I thought it would be,” said Goode about being new track promoter. “The hardest part was getting out of the racecar. The kids miss not having in the pits to help them out. I sent them to the Brooks-Shaw driving school during the off season and told them they needed to pay attention.”

Over the winter the track itself was given a face lift with several tons of dirt brought in the even out the transition out of the corners. The track width was also increased from 45′ wide to 60′ wide giving drivers more potential lines to choose from.

“We may have gotten the track a little too wet for the heats,” Goode added. “We were trying to turn it around from a Thursday practice instead of having all week to work it. It came around well for the features though.”

This season Texas Thunder Speedway’s ¼ mile, high-banked clay oval is incorporating the use of a transponder system.

Stone returns to grab IMCA Modified Main
Killeen’s Kenny Stone hadn’t turned a lap at Texas Thunder since opening night of 2009, but made his return a triumphant one. Stone, who plans on racing more close by home, started on the pole and led every lap of the 20-lapper. It wasn’t easy though. In a field boasting two former track champions, and two IMCA Modified National Rookies of the Year, Stone was hounded throughout by Cham Savage.

It was a rocky start as the 22-car field took the green for the Modified main event. Going into turn 1 several cars in the top six got out of shape with the field piling in. Getting the worst of the deal was Benji Kirkpatrick who got upside-down after his car clipped the front of Mike McCarthy. When the dust settled, twelve cars suffered some damage, with six unable to make the restart and several others seriously wounded. All drivers walked away uninjured.

As the green flew again Stone beat Brad Jordan into turn 1 for the lead with Savage giving him a quick look inside. Scooter Bates, Terry Woodall and Ken Old fell into the remaining top five spots. As the top six sorted out and Stone began inching away, Ben Ketteman got around Allen Waltermire for seventh. Ketteman slipped a lap later giving the back to Waltermire with David Goode jr. following to eighth.

Stone caught the back of the pack on lap 6, while the two past track champs, Old and Hardy Henderson battled for fifth, with Henderson getting the spot. A lap 7 caution for debris slowed the action and rebunched the field. On the restart Savage tried to get the nose in low on Stone, while Bates was trying high on Savage. Woodall slipped high from fourth, and on lap 8 went around collecting Ketteman, Doug Lorenz and Goode.

Once back to green Henderson and Old swapped fourth, within Henderson moving in on Bates. At the crossed flags it was Stone with a slight edge, Savage, Henderson, Bates and Ketteman getting by Jordan for fifth. Savage tried to close the gap on Stone diving in deeper, but Stone would get the better run off the corners.

As the lead duo approached lapped traffic, Waltermire did a half spin with Savage barely sneaking by. Henderson and George Lamphere slid to a stop trying to avoid Waltermire as the caution waved on lap 13. The top six got away clean on the now, single file restart, with Andrew Simmerman getting by Old for seventh.

The top three then gapped the fourth place battle between Bates, Ketteman and Jordan. In the final laps Stone began flexing his muscle putting some distance on Savage and Henderson. As the white flag waved Stone had built a half straightaway margin on Savage cruising the the victory in the Fat Boys Bar-B-Q, Bell County Electric Supply, McGuire Truck & Auto, Kempner Iron & Metal, Centex Motorsports powered, Hoffman H3 Chassis.

“I get a lot of help from my team, mainly Pat McGuire and this new H3 Hoffman is awesome,” commented Stone. “Week in and week out you have to have he car prepared against these guys. David(Goode) has done a great job with the track. Everything he’s put in it he’s done right. He spent the money in the right place.”

“I haven’t run here since opening night of last year I’ve got a new baby girl now so I’ll be racing closer to home. Last year when we ran at Heart o’ Texas on Fridays most of he year. I’ll be here more this year.”

“I don’t really know what happened behind me,” added Stone about the huge lap 1 pile up. “But there were a lot of good cars torn up. I’m glad to see everyone was alright.”

Welborn’s Win Sweeps Sportmods
Ronnie Welborn made his long trip from Princeton pay off as he took the heat-feature wins in the IMA Southern Sportmods. Welborn held off early challenges from Mark McDaniel. In the waning laps, Welborn eased ahead while McDaniel and Randy Doyle scrapped it out for second. At the finish it was Welborn taking the checkers in the Baxter Motorsports ride by a half straightaway.

The front row of Welborn and McDaniel stayed side by side through lap 1 with Welborn getting the nose ahead to lead. Behind the lead duet, Doyle, Mitch Tierney and GW Egbert IV fell in line. McDaniel kept the pressure on Welborn the first few circuits. Doyle slipped over turn 2 giving up third to Tierney on lap 3. Doyle closed back in on Tierney taking the spot back on lap 5.

The races only caution waved on lap 6 when Lyndon Kirk went over the turn 2 hill with a flat left front. On the restart Doyle and Tierney continued to fight for third as Welborn inched away from McDaniel. At halfway it was still Welborn, McDaniel, Doyle, Tierney and Egbert in the top five.

Doyle then began to put some heat on McDaniel for second getting inside him on lap 10. As they fought it out for second, Welborn began to increase his margin. Doyle got under McDaniel in turns 1-2 nearly getting along side. The two made slight contact, but neither skipped a beat. With the white flag in the air, Welborn had added to his advantage motoring to the win by half a straight.

Ellis Edged out Simpson in Stock Car Scramble
In between tours as a civilian contractor in Iraq, Ronnie Ellis came out to have some fun. And fun he had. Ellis swept the IMCA Stock Car field getting by early leader Anthony Otken then holding off a late charge from Ron Simpson in the 15-lap feature for the victory. Ellis also took the checkers in the first of two Stock Car heats.

Otken got a god jump on the 18-car IMCA stock Car field, but multi-time, multi-class champion, Eric Jones tried to dive inside. Otken held off Jones with Ells, Mat Guillaume and Ken Plonsky in the top five spots. Jones then tried the high side of Otken, but gave Ellis an opening on the bottom to get along side. As they ran door to door, Guillaume and Simpson closed in.

Ellis finally got the spot from Jones on lap 5 and jumped up top to get beside Otken. Ellis wrestled the top spot away on lap 6, while Guillaume and Simpson swapped fourth. At the mid point it was Ellis, Otken, Jones, Guillaume and Simpson. As Ellis put some distance on the field, Jones got by Otken for second on lap 9.

Lap 10 saw the yellow wave when Jacob Wininger spun in turns 3-4. On the restart Simpson, Jones and Otken were three wide for second with Simpson grabbing the position. Simpson got inside Ellis on lap 11 with two running side by side as Ellis held the point. In the battle of fifth, Jason Batt working his way up from the back to trade the position with Guillaume. On th final lap Simpson gave Ellis on last try but came up short as Ellis in the unsponsored, Brad Jordan powered, SCS Chassis held on for the win.

“I took a lot of smoothness,” replied Ellis. “A little patience and a good track. I spend a lot of time when I’m overseas studying and researching stuff and how it’s going to make my car work. I could hear those guys back there and I knew it was time to go”

“This is a lot different track than it used to be. It’s more a racers, a lot smoother and a lot wider. David’s done a good job on it.”

Kohl Capture Street Stock Honors
Paul Kohl led flag to flag in the “scheduled” 15-lap Street Stock feature, sort of. Kohl got out front from the pole, but lost the lead after slipping off the backstretch. A caution before completing a lap saved him the spot. Kohl never relinquished the spot from there in a race shortened due to time limit after multiple cautions slowed the event.

When green waved on the 18-car field Kohl and the outside row went, with in the inside line stacking up. Kohl was followed by Chris Florio, Dennis Simmons, Ryan Anderson and Duane Toyne. Lap 2 saw the first of the yellow epidemic when Tim Fasano, Bill Siegman and Gene Burnett tangled in turn 2. On the restart, Toyne slid off turn 1 to bring the yellow right back out.

The top 3 stayed nose to tail as green waved again, but it didn’t last long as Florio spun from third in turn 2 on lap 3. Kohl got a good jump with Bo Phelan getting past Tony McPherson sr. for fourth and Terry Tschoerner up to sixth. Kohl came out of turn 2 too high and went over the edge giving up the lead to Simmons, but Don Rea and Leon Mendenhall got together to bring out a caution.

The yellow was a break for Kohl who got his spot back going back to the last completed lap. When green waved again Kohl and Simmons pulled away from Anderson, Phelan, McPherson sr., Fasano and Florio working his way back up. Tony McPherson jr. brought out another yellow hankie when he went ver the back stretch hill on lap 8.

Due ti time constraints the race was given a green, white, checkered finish. So as green flew Kohl got away while Simmons had his issues with a tricky turn 2 giving up spots to Anderson, Phelan and McPherson sr. Simmons continued to overshoot turn 2 giving up fifth to Florio. Up front it was Kohl going on to snag he his first Texas Thunder victory.

Michael Dion got the early lead in the 15-lap Dwarf Car feature, with Billy White, Buck McFarlin, Jeremy Wilcox and GW Egbert IV in tow. Egbert got along side Wilcox and by after a brief side by side battle. White began trying the high side of Dion for lead, while McFarlin was looking under White for second. Bryan Schieble spun on lap 2 to slow the action.

Once back to green McFarlin renewed his challenge on White for second battling side by side on lap 4. White then gave up third to Wilcox when Dion slipped off turn 2 putting McFarlin out front. Wilcox began pressuring McFarlin for the lead, while Egbert and Greg Sexton sr. got by White for third and fourth.

Egbert too second from Wilcox on lap 9 and closed in on McFarlin for the top spot. Egbert used the low side to beside and by McFarlin for the point on lap 11. McFarlin didn’t surrender easy staying glued to Egbert’ bumper, literally and figuratively. Despite a good shot on the bumper, Egbert was able to hang on to snare the checkers.

KILLEEN, Texas (March 3) – An early season practice session gave David Goode Sr. a new perspective on running a race track.

The new promoter at Texas Thunder Speedway opened the gates for an afternoon of hot laps on Feb. 20. Skies were overcast and Goode spent as much time answering the telephone as he did tending to last minute details.

“We had 50 cars show up and we had about that many people call and ask if hot laps were going to be canceled,” he said. “One of the best things about the day was that it made us look at the way we did some things and now we’ll do them better during the season.”

“I was impressed with the track surface,” he added. “We ran hot laps for five hours during the day and it really held up well.”

Some 60 truckloads of dirt were added during the off season to increase the straightaway banking on the short quarter mile.

Three sanctioned divisions, the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMods, return to weekly shows at Killeen starting this Saturday, March 6.

“We already have 89 cars registered to race this season and I know we’ll have more by opening night,” Goode said. “I really like these IMCA classes. Drivers don’t have to spend a lot of money in any of them to be competitive. If they can get the set up right, that’s where it’s at.”

Goode owns a tow truck company and watched from an infield seat before buying Michael Walter’s Southern SportMod operation.

“The next week I was in for a rude awakening,” admitted Goode, who competed 1-1/2 seasons in the class before getting into a Modified and garnering local rookie of the year honors.. His one career win in that division came in 2008 at Texas Thunder, in a field that included future national champion P.J. Egbert.

Goode’s son David Jr. won a pair of Southern SportMod features last season. His daughter Sarah earned the local SportMod ROY prize and finished in the top 10 in 2009 Lady Eagle point standings.

Texas Thunder hosts the July 4 regional event for Southern SportMods, a night when race fans will also be able to enjoy the incomparable Fort Hood fireworks display. Point races for the IMCA divisions continue through Sept. 25.

Modified points figure toward ButlerBuilt South Central Region standings. Texas Thunder is in the Stephenville Starter Southern Region for Stock Cars.

Dirt Track Weekend To Move A Week Later To March 4-5
Schedule Will Continue To Feature O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Model Series, Limited Modifieds, Modifieds

FORT WORTH, Texas (February 27, 2010) – The Texas World Dirt Track Championship, one of the most prestigious dirt track events in the country, will shift a week later from its traditional date in 2011 and be held March 4-5 at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.

The Texas World Dirt Track Championship, which annually attracts a car count in excess of 300 competitors, will continue to feature three divisions – O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Model Series, Limited Modifieds and Modifieds – when it returns in 2011 on its new race weekend.

The date change will allow competitors another week of preparation for the premier event while also providing a seamless transition to the start of the dirt track season that kicks off the following weekend.

“Our event already attracts the best dirt track racers from across the country and the date change will allow for even more competitors to make the trip next year,” Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage said. “We did not want to go any later in March and conflict with the start of their season at their local tracks, but the additional week will provide racers with additional time to prepare for such a prestigious race weekend and be in race form for the opening of their weekly seasons.”

The race week will continue its tradition of an open practice for all classes leading into the race weekend and the session is scheduled for Thursday, March 3. On Friday, March 4, Modified and Limited Modified classes will run heats while the O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Models will conduct practice. O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Model heats, in addition to Limited Modified and Modified last-chance qualifiers, will be run Saturday, March 5, and the evening will culminate with championship races in all three classes.

Greenbrier Arkansas’ Jack Sullivan wasn’t planning on a trip to Texas this weekend, but when the race he had scheduled rained out, the team headed west. After 40-laps Sullivan found himself in the prestigious TMS Victory Lane, and $3,500 richer. Sullivan started on the pole and led every lap, but it wasn’t all that easy.

Chasing Sullivan throughout most of the race was yet another pro, Billy Moyer. Moyer caught Sullivan in traffic for the final few circuits, but could get no closer than Sullivan’s rear bumper as the Arkansas duo finished one-two to sweep the local SUPR stars.

As green waved on the 22-car SUPER Late Model feature, Sullivan jumped out from the pole, while outside running mate Kenny Merchant slipped high and fell back to fifth. Bubba Mullins, Moyer and Wendall Wallace filed in between the two. Allen Tippen and Kyle Cummings then put Merchant back on lap 2. Moyer got along side Mullins on lap 3 as they ran door to door until yellow waved for a spin by Merchant compounding his early problems.

Under the yellow, Wallace pulled off from the top five. Once back to green Moyer got by Mullins for second with Cummings following to third. Ray Moore then set his sights on Mullins until debris brought out the caution on lap 5. As the top five stayed single file, Jason Hughes took a look under Kevin Sitton for seventh. Moore was able to complete the pass on Mullins for fourth, with Hughes getting around Sitton on lap 7.

Moore than began pressuring Cummings for fourth as the lead duo motored away. Moore and Cummings ran side by side on lap13, as Hughes closed in on both. Sullivan caught the back of the field on lap 14 holding a safe lead on Moyer. Moore took third from Cummings on lap 15. Moyer cut into Sullivan’s lead as they exited traffic on lap 17. That gap closed farther on lap 19 when yellow waved for a spin by Chris Holley.

Back under green the race came to halfway with Sullivan, Moyer, Moore, Cummings and Hughes in the top five. Hughes then snared fourth from Cummings on lap 21. In the pack, Merchant was rebounding from his earlier issues making his way back up into the top ten. Mullins tried to dive Merchant on lap 24 but made contact and spun in turn 3.

Two-time TWDTC champion Rob Litton, who had to take a provisional, made his way around Howard Willis for seventh on the restart. The top two again put distance on Moore, Hughes and Cummings by lap 25. With ten to go, Moyer was within four car lengths on Sullivan as the laps wound down. Moyer, who was getting in better, turned up the heat on Sullivan.

Moyer tried a dive bomb move on lap 35 but slid high giving up some ground. Moyer closed the gap as the two hit lapped traffic on lap 38. Moyer tried high several times, getting hung behind a slower car at one point. Sullivan took the white with six car lengths on Moyer. As the checkers waved it was Sullivan in the AAA Diesel Service, JFR Graphics, All-Star Performance, Central Arkansas Pest Control, Vick Hill Racing Engines, GRT Chassis scoring the big win.

“That was some drama,” replied Sullivan about the final laps in traffic with Billy Moyer on his tail. “I just tried not to give him an easy way around. If he was going to get around he was going to have to run high. I wasn’t going to let him get under me. I just told myself to breathe, keep cool and hit your marks. Hopefully it will pan out.”

“I knew Billy(Moyer) was back there. I could smell him. I saw him a couple times and I could hear him. I kind of knew if I could slow down and just hit my marks an just get off the corner that he couldn’t make a pass. I just didn’t want to overshoot the corner and make a mistake. I didn’t want to lose the race because of me.”

“We were actually going to go to Alabama, but he weather looked bad. We the car loaded and everyone ready to go so we decided to head west. The only real changes we had to make on the car was weight. With the open motor rules they have we were able to run with them.”
