Dirt Track Weekend To Move A Week Later To March 4-5
Schedule Will Continue To Feature O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Model Series, Limited Modifieds, Modifieds

FORT WORTH, Texas (February 27, 2010) – The Texas World Dirt Track Championship, one of the most prestigious dirt track events in the country, will shift a week later from its traditional date in 2011 and be held March 4-5 at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.

The Texas World Dirt Track Championship, which annually attracts a car count in excess of 300 competitors, will continue to feature three divisions – O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Model Series, Limited Modifieds and Modifieds – when it returns in 2011 on its new race weekend.

The date change will allow competitors another week of preparation for the premier event while also providing a seamless transition to the start of the dirt track season that kicks off the following weekend.

“Our event already attracts the best dirt track racers from across the country and the date change will allow for even more competitors to make the trip next year,” Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage said. “We did not want to go any later in March and conflict with the start of their season at their local tracks, but the additional week will provide racers with additional time to prepare for such a prestigious race weekend and be in race form for the opening of their weekly seasons.”

The race week will continue its tradition of an open practice for all classes leading into the race weekend and the session is scheduled for Thursday, March 3. On Friday, March 4, Modified and Limited Modified classes will run heats while the O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Models will conduct practice. O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Model heats, in addition to Limited Modified and Modified last-chance qualifiers, will be run Saturday, March 5, and the evening will culminate with championship races in all three classes.

Greenbrier Arkansas’ Jack Sullivan wasn’t planning on a trip to Texas this weekend, but when the race he had scheduled rained out, the team headed west. After 40-laps Sullivan found himself in the prestigious TMS Victory Lane, and $3,500 richer. Sullivan started on the pole and led every lap, but it wasn’t all that easy.

Chasing Sullivan throughout most of the race was yet another pro, Billy Moyer. Moyer caught Sullivan in traffic for the final few circuits, but could get no closer than Sullivan’s rear bumper as the Arkansas duo finished one-two to sweep the local SUPR stars.

As green waved on the 22-car SUPER Late Model feature, Sullivan jumped out from the pole, while outside running mate Kenny Merchant slipped high and fell back to fifth. Bubba Mullins, Moyer and Wendall Wallace filed in between the two. Allen Tippen and Kyle Cummings then put Merchant back on lap 2. Moyer got along side Mullins on lap 3 as they ran door to door until yellow waved for a spin by Merchant compounding his early problems.

Under the yellow, Wallace pulled off from the top five. Once back to green Moyer got by Mullins for second with Cummings following to third. Ray Moore then set his sights on Mullins until debris brought out the caution on lap 5. As the top five stayed single file, Jason Hughes took a look under Kevin Sitton for seventh. Moore was able to complete the pass on Mullins for fourth, with Hughes getting around Sitton on lap 7.

Moore than began pressuring Cummings for fourth as the lead duo motored away. Moore and Cummings ran side by side on lap13, as Hughes closed in on both. Sullivan caught the back of the field on lap 14 holding a safe lead on Moyer. Moore took third from Cummings on lap 15. Moyer cut into Sullivan’s lead as they exited traffic on lap 17. That gap closed farther on lap 19 when yellow waved for a spin by Chris Holley.

Back under green the race came to halfway with Sullivan, Moyer, Moore, Cummings and Hughes in the top five. Hughes then snared fourth from Cummings on lap 21. In the pack, Merchant was rebounding from his earlier issues making his way back up into the top ten. Mullins tried to dive Merchant on lap 24 but made contact and spun in turn 3.

Two-time TWDTC champion Rob Litton, who had to take a provisional, made his way around Howard Willis for seventh on the restart. The top two again put distance on Moore, Hughes and Cummings by lap 25. With ten to go, Moyer was within four car lengths on Sullivan as the laps wound down. Moyer, who was getting in better, turned up the heat on Sullivan.

Moyer tried a dive bomb move on lap 35 but slid high giving up some ground. Moyer closed the gap as the two hit lapped traffic on lap 38. Moyer tried high several times, getting hung behind a slower car at one point. Sullivan took the white with six car lengths on Moyer. As the checkers waved it was Sullivan in the AAA Diesel Service, JFR Graphics, All-Star Performance, Central Arkansas Pest Control, Vick Hill Racing Engines, GRT Chassis scoring the big win.

“That was some drama,” replied Sullivan about the final laps in traffic with Billy Moyer on his tail. “I just tried not to give him an easy way around. If he was going to get around he was going to have to run high. I wasn’t going to let him get under me. I just told myself to breathe, keep cool and hit your marks. Hopefully it will pan out.”

“I knew Billy(Moyer) was back there. I could smell him. I saw him a couple times and I could hear him. I kind of knew if I could slow down and just hit my marks an just get off the corner that he couldn’t make a pass. I just didn’t want to overshoot the corner and make a mistake. I didn’t want to lose the race because of me.”

“We were actually going to go to Alabama, but he weather looked bad. We the car loaded and everyone ready to go so we decided to head west. The only real changes we had to make on the car was weight. With the open motor rules they have we were able to run with them.”

Ft. Worth, Tx.,(Feb. 27Th, 2010) The 4/10th mile, semi-banked dirt track at Texas Motor Speedway completed it’s annual Texas Dirt Track Championship events Saturday night with championship races in all classes. The SUPR Late Models headlined the night with 55 Late Models signing in, including several pro touring invaders from Arkansas. Final qualifiers were run in the Modified and Limited Modifieds to fill each of their fields for the three big main events capping off the night.

Malchus Motors to Modified Main Money
Red Oak’s Bobby Malchus, who came up just short of qualifying for all three features, made it pay off in the one he did make. Malchus coming from his fifth starting spot worked his way past early leader Timothy Culp near the 1/4 mar of the 40-lapper. Malchus then held off challenges from Sean Jones, and Patrick Daniel near the finish to snag the victory.

Culp eased ahead of Bumper Jones on lap 1 as the top two stayed side by side, but a spin by Triston Dycus set up a complete restart. Culp got the advantage again with Jones and multi-time Supernationals champion, Mark Noble in tow. S. Jones, Malchus and Jared Webb were three wide for fourth. S. Jones and Malchus stayed wheel to wheel for for fourth, with more two and three wide action in the field.

B. Jones used th high side to get around Culp for the lead on lap 3, but Culp tried to come back low until yellow waved for debris on lap 3. Malchus and S. Jones were at it again once the race resumed, with Jesse Stovall making a big charge up to seventh. Malchus, running the top, got around Culp for third on lap 4. Stovall took sixth from Morgan Bagley on lap 5. Once disposing of S. Jones, Malchus and Noble nearly made contact coming out of turn 2 in the fight for second.

Malchus continued his charge n the cushion catching B. Jones for he lead on lap 7. After a brief side by side battle Malchus took over the point on lap 9. With S. Jones trying inside Noble for third, Stovall and Scotty Brown were side by side for fifth. Brown got the spot with Stovall falling into the clutches of Bagley. S. Jones and Noble continued to run wheel to wheel for third and caught B. Jones going three wide for second.

S. Jones finally got the spot, with Noble third and Stovall side by side with B. Jones for fourth. B. Jones kept the spot and got beside Noble for third on lap 18. Coming to the crossed flags it was Malchus, S. Jones, B. Jones, Noble and Stovall in the top five. Brown and Daniel picked off spots on lap 20 with Daniel Stovall and B. Jones three wide for fourth on lap 21.

B. Jones slid too high giving Brown the opening to get by on lap 23. S. Jones was reeling in Malchus on lap 24 and got a caution for debris to close the gap. On the restart Daniel B. Jones and Stovall almost made it three wide for fourth, with Daniel getting the spot. S. Jones was just starting to look inside Malchus when Culp spun in turn 2 to bring out a yellow.

Once back to green, S. Jones broke an pulled out of the way moving Brow to second with Daniel and Stovall behind him. This left Malchus with a good gap back the three car battle for second, while Tim Clonch moved into the top five. Daniel kept pressure on Brown getting along side and by on lap 30. In the pack Noble and Steve Whiteaker jr. were swapping the eighth spot.

Brown and Stovall wre side by side for third on lap 33, with past TWDTC winner, Randy Timms breaking into the top ten. With five to go Malchus had a ten-car advantage over Daniel, when Clonch blew up running fifth and was able to get off the track without caution. Daniel closed a couple car lengths but at he checkers it was Malchus, by 8-car lengths grabbing the win in the Dunn Motorsports, Rowland Racing Engines, Dirt Works Chasis.

“After the Pole Dash I felt like we had a pretty good car,” said Malchus. “As big as the track is with this deal if you don’t make a move real quick It’s hard to get it done. After about ten laps we got the lead, near lap twenty I felt like the right rear(tire) was going away and it kept me worried. I really didn’t hear anyone behind me so I went on and did the best we could.”

“Never look back. Just look ahead and never worry about what’s behind you. I just drive the car like it’s the last lap every lap. We check everything on the car real good and make sure we’re on top of it.”

“I wondered about things at the end. When you feel the car slowing down and you know you were fast enough to pass everybody you start to think about things going wrong.”

“We tried to get in all three shows, but the Limited Modified didn’t go good all weekend long. Then Tom(Lorenz) let me drive his Late Model and we just missed the show by one spot so didn’t feel bad about that”

Doing double duty, Quinlan’s Tim Clonch found himself in the right spot at the right time in the Limited Modified feature event. Clonch capitalized when early leader Troy Taylor and Shane Hebert hooked bumper while battling for the lead. Clonch snuck by on lap 23 and held a comfortable margin on Howard Willis as the checkers waved.

Taylor beat Derick Grigsby into turn 1, with Willis and Evans in line and three or four wide racing in the pack. Willis got past Grigsby on lap 1 for second when Travis Johnson lost the nose panel on lap 2 to bring out yellow. Clonch began his move forward coming from 15th to challenge Johnson for fifth, while Hebert and Sean Jones ran side by side for seventh.

By lap 5 Taylor and Willis had put some distance on Grigsby, Evans, Clonch, Johnson and Hebert. Hebert, using the top, got by Clonch and Johnson on lap 6. Yellow waved on lap 8 for debris at the same time Evans slowed from fifth. On the restart Evans tried to make a go, but slowed again and pulled, while multi-time IMCA Southern Sportmod champion, Keith White made it to the top ten.

Hebert got along side Willis on lap 12 while Taylor pulled away. Hebert slipped on top giving Willis back the spot and Clonch third. At the midpoint it was Taylor, Willis, Clonch, Hebert and David Ashley in the top five. Last nights winner Grigsby spun on lap 17 to bring out the yellow. Debris on the restart quickly brought the yellow back out.

Clonch and Hebert swapped third back under green, when Mark Smith spun in turn 3. The next restart wasn’t much better when Trevor Lane, Waylon Ball and Michael Martin tangled in turn 2. Finally back under green, Clonch got past Willis for second, followed by Hebert to third. Hebert then got beside and by Clonch for second. Taylor, who had been easing away, now had Hebert charging and closing fast.

Hebert caught Taylor on lap 23 with the two hooking bumpers coming out of turn 4. This gave Clonch the opportunity to sneak by both before the unhooked themselves but not before giving up spots to Willis and Ashley. Hebert was finally able to take Taylor, but for fourth, while Sean Jones moved up to sixth. Up front it was Clonch with smooth sailing coming to take the victory in the Tom Lorenz/Jay Jenkins owned, Jeffs Performance Engines, Smileys Chassis.

“I may have used the car up early trying to get to the front,” commented Clonch. “I knew that if I could be close and something happened or they broke I could be in position. The car was better than I was getting around the track. At times I’d have super lap and others I wouldn’t hit it just right. The racecar was better than I was.”

“I got it up to third and held it there and luckily those boys hooked bumpers and I was able make the pass. I think if we had started a little closer to the front I wouldn’t have used the car so much. I think I abused the right rear a little more than I had to. All in all it was a good run.”

“We tried to get the car freed up when the track is better. On a race track like it an easy thing for us. What’s hard is getting freed up to run better with the low horsepower motor. With the limitations on things the car goes better on tracks like this. We know what it takes to go good. Last night we struggled a bit due to the tackiness and the holes.”

“It looks like we broke a rod in the Modified. It’s got a hole in the oil pan. That’s a brand new racecar we just put together and I was plenty happy with that. We didn’t much practice on it, but I think it was better car. It came from far to fifth before it let go. So I was pleased with it too.”

By J M Hallas

FT. Worth, Tx.,(Feb. 26Th, 2010) The 4/10 mile, semi-banked dirt trak at Texas Motor Speedway played host to the annual Texas World Dirt Championships featuring the SUPR Late Models, Modifieds and Limited. Big name drivers from all over the midwest and mid south signed in with eight states represented.

National champions in both the IMCA and USMTS sanctions, plus several Rookie of the year award winners filled the Modified ranks. In the Limited Modifieds both IMCA Southern Sportmod titlists highlighted their field.

Despite cold, threatening weather fields of 125 Modifieds and Limited Modifieds ran heat races and qualifiers to lock in the top eight for each A-qualifier. SUPR Late Models run a complete one-day show on Saturday night.

Grigsby Grabs Top Spot in Limited Modified Qualifier
Mashall’s Derick Grigsby used a late race restart to get by past Texas World Dirt Track Champion, Travis Evans for the lead in the 15-lapper. Grigsby then had to hold off hard charging Troy Taylor another past champion from the Modified division.

The first attempt at a start saw Kyle Nelson get a good jump but yellow was quickly out for a second try. Evans jumped out front with six-wide pinball racing further back in the pack. Gary Fox, Grigsby and Waylon Ball followed Evans. It was still two and three wide racing on lap 1 as the field tried to sort out.

Ball and Grigsby were side by side on lap 3 for second and were joined by Fox on lap trying to go three abreast on lap 4. Three wide racing was common back through the pack. Cody Simpson spun on lap 8 from mid pack causing the waters to part and narrowly miss contact.

On the restart Taylor and Travis Johnson both got by Grigsby, but Taylor slipped high in turn 4 giving the spot back. Taylor regained momentum and was back on Grigsby as they duo closed on Johnson, with Taylor moving up third. Fox lost tire on lap 10 rolling to a stop in turn 4, while the tire stopped in turn 3.

Once back to green Grigsby jumped on Evans coming out of turn 4 to sna the top spot on lap 11. Taylor was next to get by Evans on lap 13 and make a run on Grigsby. On the final lap Grigsby was hanging on keeping Taylor at bay while Howard Willis, Jimmy Day and Trevor lane slugged it out for the final transfer spot. Grigsby held off Taylor, while Willis and Day closed out Lane for the guaranteed spots in Saturdays Championship event.

Palmer’s Terry Pritchett snuck past early leader Bumper Jones as the 15-lap Modified main ran their Q-qualifier. Pritchett then was forced to battle with Timothy Culp during late race restart. Culp would get along side Pritchett, but Pritchett scored he win by .233 seconds at the line.

As green waved on the 15-lap Modified feature it was 4-wide coming to the flagstand, with Jones getting the lead and Jared Webb running side Pritchett for second. Darrell Nelson took third from Webb on lap 1. Jones slipped high on lap 3 giving Pritchett an opening to grab the point on lap 4, with Nelson moving up to second.

Nelson closed in on Jones for second, with three wide racing mid pack. Nelson lost third to Webb on lap 5, then fourth to Bobby Malchus on lap 6 as Culp moved to sixth. The red flag waved on lap 8 when Jason Teague hooked a rut in turns -4 and flipped end over end. Teague was uninjured, but the car shed nearly its sheet metal.

On the restart Webb tried to look low on Jones for second, but lost third to Malchus. Webb charged back getting by both Jones and Malchus for second, with Culp getting a run on Jones for third. As Culp and Webb battled for second and Malchus scrapped it out with Jones, Pritchett was able to edge away.

Steve Whiteaker jr. brought out the yellow on lap 13 when his hood flew up across the windshield opening and he stopped in turn 4. Once back under green Nelson and multi-time IMCA Supernationals champion, Mark Noble fought with Jones for fourth and fifth.

Before a lap was complete Howard Willis saw his night end rolling to top in turn 2 while behind him Mike Hansen, Triston Dycus, George White and Chris Henigan all tangled between turns 1-2. The restart saw Mark Dotson get by David Winslett for the final transfer. Up front Culp had a run on Pritchett for th lead. It was wheel to wheel down the back straight, but it was Pritchett eking out the win.

Texas World Dirt Track Championship, presented by O’Reilly’s Auto Parts @ Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, 2/27-28/09
By J M Hallas

Ft. Worth, Tx., (Feb. 28th, 2009) Proving once again that everything is bigger in Texas, the Texas World Dirt Track Championship set a new standard for total car count. With 60 entries for the SUPR Late Model, $3,500 to win main event, the total number of cars in the pits climbed to 385, easily surpassing the old mark.

With final qualifying features for the Modifieds and Limited Modfieds, plus a full race program for the SUPR Late Models, fans were in store for an exciting conclusion to this years champion races.

Evans elusive enough for Limited Modified main win
One way to keep from being passed for the lead is keeping your competitors far enough behind that they can never mount a challenge. Bullard’s Travis Evans put this strategy into practice on his way to the Limited Modified Championship. Evans got away on the start and subsequent restarts keeping the 26-car field at bay. Evans only pressure came early, when Shane Hebert tried to stay with him.

Evans and Jamie Burford paced the field to green for the 30-lap championship main event. Evans was first into turn 1, with Hebert second and Ted Thomas, Chris Hennigan and Burford three wide for third after Burford slid high in turn 1. Hebert closed in Evans on lap 2 for the lead, but never mounted an attack.

On lap 3 Joe Courvillion, Matt Mueller and Michael Robertson were three abreast for fifth. As Courvillion took the spot, Dennie Geiber moved in making three wide for sixth. By lap 5 Evans had begun to open up an advantage on Hebert. Mueller brought out th yellow on lap 7 when he spun in turn 2 and ended up on top of the infield guard rail.

Once back under green, Evans again inched ahead of Hebert who quickly built a margin over Thomas, Courvilion, Hennigan and Geiber running nose to tail. Robertson, using the high groove got along side and by Geiber for sixth on lap 8. Robertson then around Hennigan for fifth a lap later, while Courvillion was looking under Thomas for third.

Geiber then put the heat on Courvillion for fourth, with Robertson spinning ending his charge to the front. On the restart, Geiber took a peek under Thomas, while former IMCA Sportmod National champion, Jeff Turner worked his way past Burford and Hennigan for sixth. Geiber was finally able to get under Thomas for third on lap 11.

At halfway the top five were Evans, Hebert, Geiber, Thomas and Courvillion. By lap 20 Evans had run away to nearly a full straightaway lead over Hebert. The margin shrunk quickly when former USAC Silver Crown champion, Paul White broke and rolled to stop in turn 2. As the field went back to green, Geiber was putting pressure on Hebert for second, giving Evans the chance to again motor away.

Geiber got the position from Hebert, who slowed and pulled off on lap 22. With five to go Evans had half a straight lead on Geiber, who had a big gap to Courvillion, Thomas, Turner, Burford, Jacob Pirkle and Andy Claiborne. Thomas, Burford and Turner took it three wide for fourth on lap 26. Up front, Evans was still holding a comfortable margin on Geiber as he took the checkers in the Four Seasons Heating & Air Conditioning, Dent Magic, Jeff’s Performance, IRP Chassis.

“A little bit of good and a lot of luck”, replied Evans, “When we had the (pole) dash I knew we had to get pole. Once I got that done I felt better about getting this done. I just held on and hit my marks and didn’t worry about what everyone else was doing. I figured is they were that fast that they would just come on around.”

“My car was pretty good from the day we got here. We made some changes throughout the weekend. We gambled a little here tonight doing some work with the tires. I think it paid off.”

“This is first car that Jason Ingalls built. We’re real proud of it. Hopefully he’ll sell a lot of them now.”

Phillips fends off Arpin in Modified finale
Missouri’s Terry Phillips and Canadian Steve Arpin put on a classic battle throughout the 40-lap Modified Championship finale. Arpin got out front early, but gave way to Phillips on lap 7. Arpin used lap traffic near the midway point to get the lead back for one lap until Phillips re-assumed the point. On the final lap Phillips had to dodge a lapped car giving Arpin one last run at him coming to the checkers. Phillips eked out the win by a mere car length at the line.

Arpin beat Phillips into turn 1 at the start of the 26-car, $3000 to win, Modified main event. Phillips fell in line second, with William Gould third. As the top five sorted out single file, John Allen and Jason Armstrong battled side by side for sixth. Arpin had Phillips on his bumper as they eased away from Gould. With nearly everyone on the bottom grove, Chad Wheeler was using the high side to get along side Tate Cole and Rodney Sanders.

Phillips took his first look for he lead on lap 10 and finally got beside Arpin on lap 11. After a brief wheel to wheel battle, Phillips took over the point on lap 12. Arpin then moved to the top looking for a way to get the lead back. The lead duo caught traffic on lap 15, with Arpin pinning Phillips behind a slower car to get the top spot back on lap 16.

Phillips was able to get the nose back under Arpin on lap 17, retaking the lead on lap 18. Phillips and Arpin were still side by side on lap 18 as they were forced to go three wide around a lapped car. At the crossed flags it was Phillips beginning to creep away, Arpin, Gould, Tommy Meyer and Timothy Culp in the top five.

With Phillips increasing his margin, Gould began reeling in Arpin for second catching him on lap 26. Arpin was able to regain some space as the two worked lapped traffic, but Gould closed the gap once clear on lap 32. With five laps to go, Phillips had a 1/4 straightaway lead over Arpin and Gould, who held gap to Meyer.

Phillips again had slower cars become rolling road blocks with two to go. This gave Arpin the opportunity to sneak back in, with Gould in tow. As the white flag waved Arpin was there, along with Gould and a rapidly closing Meyer. Coming out of turn 4 Phillips had to move high to avoid a lapped car. Arpin gave it the ol’ college try coming to the line, but fell a car length short as Phillips in the Andy’s Frozen Custard, Don Babb Motorsports, Hatfield Racing Engines, Integra Shocks, Simpson, GRT Chassis, was taking the victory.

“I was fortunate enough to get some lucky breaks early,” stated Phillips “Running the race is easy, getting into the race is the hard part with these field of cars. Knowing we had the front after the dash was a big weight off me. I just watched the track to see what it was going to do. With a big race like this and so many good cars, you’ve got have a lot of luck and be I the right place at the right time.”

“I could hear him (Arpin ) out there. I knew he was close, but I was having a little trouble(with my brakes). I wasn’t going to block, but I wasn’t going to give him the good line either. He kind of picked me on the lapped cars, which is he needed to do. He’s a good driver and raced me clean. It worked out for us. It must have been a heck of a race to watch.”

“We had a pretty good car, but that’s about the time my brakes went away. These race cars are hard to drive with no brakes. I hit my corners right without having to use much brake. I knew if stayed patient and didn’t over drive the car I’d be alright.”

“ On the last lap I slid up a little bit and he’d go to the bottom. I had to get around that lapped car. I went in there and the pedal went to the floor and it pushed up. I tried to keep the car down as much as I could so he couldn’t drift up and get a good run of the corner. Once I got mine straight I eased in he gas and tried to beat him to the line. I new we were ok then.”

Litton leads charge in SUPR Late Model lid lifter
Alexandria, Louisiana’s, Rob Litton picked up his second Texas World Dirt Track title, but the road to the winner’s circle was an easy one. Litton was challenged early by Kurt Kile with the two making contact in the latter stages, that sent Ku. Kile around. In the final laps Litton had to hold off 2008 SUPR Rookie of the Year, Kevin Sitton for the win.

Polesitter Doug Ingalls as first into turn 1 at the start of the 22-car, 40-lap, $3,500 to win SUPR season opener. But it was Litton coming out of turn 2 with lead followed by Ku. Kile, John Anderson, Lee Davis and Ingalls. As the top 6 began to string out, Allen Tippen and Patrik Daniel were side by side for eighth. Sitton got along side and by Ingalls on lap 3 for sixth, then put Tippen in his wake on lap 4 for fifth.

Sitton continued his march to the front putting pressure on Anderson for fourth on lap 8. In the pack, James Ward and Ingalls were dicing for sixth, while Howard Willis was making his way up to seventh from near the back of he field. Ku. Kile snck past Lton for the top spot on ap 19 as they negotiated traffic. Litton regrabbed the point on lap 20, with Sitton and Anderson door to door for third.

The lead duo got hung up in traffic, while Ward and Willis moved their way into the top five. As the race wound down to the final five laps, Ku. Kile got into the back of Litton sending Ku. Kile around and to the rear of the field for the restart. Sitton tried to hang on to Litton once the green waved as they put some distance on Ward and Willis. who were separated by lapped cars.

Ward slipped too high on lap 36 loosing ground and regaining control right in front of Willis making a battle for third. Up front Litton was inching his way ahead of Sitton. As Litton took the white flag he held a five car length edge over Sitton and motored on to the checkers in the LMS Truck Center, Litton Motorsports, TWM Racing Products, Wall to Wall Performance Engines, Stuckey Enterprises, Rocket Chassis, where he found Victory Lane once before in 2004.

“It was a lot of luck,” said Litton. “We’ve got a bunch of guys that work on the car and they do a great job. We try to be as prepared as we can, but it takes some luck too.”

“Even in our heat race there was always someone close. With 60 cars from across the country, you know there’s a tough field. You always know someone’s right there. When we got out in clean air the car felt real good. I knew someone would have to be unbelievably good to get around me. Lapped traffic is different story.”

“We don’t have any communication with the crew, but we do use hand signals. It’s still hard to tell who’s behind you. Here you can look up at the scoreboard and tell who’s there.”

“This is our first race with #68, that was his number when he raced. He’s started a new company, ’48 Ford Truck, that’s why we changed the number.”

By J M Hallas

Ft. Worth, Tx.,(Feb 27th, 2009) In what is rapidly becoming THE biggest dirt track racing event in the region, Texas Motor Speedway’s Dirt Track hosted another year of the Texas World Dirt Track Championship, presented by O’Reilly’s Auto Parts on the 4/10 mile, semi-banked track just north of Ft. Worth.

Drivers from fourteen states and one Canadian province rolled through the pit gates, figuratively, as the overflow of teams quickly spilled over to the adjacent camping area.

The Modified entries of 212, included not only regional and local track champions, rookie’s of the years, but National champions as well. A virtual who’s who in the dirt modified racing community, with heat races that looked more like features at Anytrack, USA on a Saturday night.

Limited Modifieds had 123 drivers signed in, headed by two National champions, one of which came up a little short and failed to qualify through Friday night’s action.

Kicking of the SUPR Late Model season, many of the south, central regions top pilots were on hand for hot lap sessions throughout the night, readying themselves for the $3,500 to win opener n Saturday.

Phillips flies to Modified A-Qualifier win
Springfield, Missouri’s Terry Phillips may be better known for his prowess driving a dirt Late Model, But Friday nights he proved he can handle a Modified as well. Phillips, who started in the second row of Friday night’s A-qualifier, battled by Tommy Meyer for second, hen got the lead from Canadian, Steve Arpin halfway through the 15-lap event. From there Phillips ran away to grab the win.

Meyer and Arpin paced 21-car starting field o green in a fight for the top eight spots to be locked in for Saturday nights championship race. Arpin jumped out front the front stretch beating Meyer in to turn 1 for the lead. In the pack small wars were erupting, with as you would expect, some paint trading and rubbing.

Timothy Culp and Vance Wilson made contact several times before Wilson ended up facing the wrong direction in turn 4 on lap 1 bringing out the yellow. Vance was done for night, while Culp continued with a slightly adjusted door panel. On the restart the field broke away clean, with William Gould quickly moving from the last row, into the top ten.

Gould had just gotten past John Allen for the transfer spot, when Rodney Sanders spun to bring out the caution on lap 3. Once back to green the top three eased away from the est of the field. On lap 5 Phillips started challenging Arpin for the lead. Phillips took a look outside, with Meyer filling the hole low looking for second.

Phillips continued to chase Arpin on the high side and got the edge coming out of turn 2 beating Arpin back to the line to lead on lap 7. Meyer then began to put the heat on Arpin for second, with Gould finally resecuring the fnal transfer spot. Phillips was able to pull away, while Meyer took second from Arpin. As he white flag was shown, Phillips had built nearly a full straightaway lead, easily cruising to the win.

Hebert hot as Cajun cooking for Limited Modified victory
Lafayette, Louisiana’s Shane Hebert showed the Limited field nothing but his rear bumper in the 15-lap A-qualifier. Hebert started on the pole, got a big jump on Matt Mueller when green waved, and proceeded to lead every lap. Hebert got a late challenge from fellow Cajun, Jamie Burford but was up to the task for the win.

As Hebert grabbed the early lead, Travis Evans snagged second, with Mueller and Chris Hennigan falling in line. As the top six sorted out single file, from seventh on back it was still side by side through the pack. Hennigan and Burford both got by Meueller on lap 1 for third and fourth. The lead quartet then pulled away from Andy Claiborne, who got past Meuller.

By lap 5, Hebert had put some distance on Evans, who had a gap back to Hennigan and Burford. Burford picked off third from Hennigan on lap 6, while former IMCA Sportmod champ, Jeff Turner and Ted Thomas got past Claiborrne and Meueller in the fight for the last transfer position. With five laps to go the battle in the pack was still wheel to wheel.

As Hebert was on cruise control, Burford ran down Evans for second catching him on lap 11. After a brief battle Burford got by Evens on lap 12 and went in search of the leader. Burford was only able to get close as the white flag waved, but never close enough to mount a serious challenge as Hebert took the checkers with a slight margin.

Time is running out for drivers to pre-register for the upcoming Texas World Dirt Track Championship at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track and take advantage of a new incentive.

TMS officials have received 143 pre-entry registrations for the three-day event, up dramatically from last year’s total of 91, and the increase can be attributed to the incentive being offered to the competitors. For all drivers that meet the Feb. 15 pre-entry deadline, they will become eligible for two provisional spots that will be added to the rear of the field for each race. Drivers for these spots will be randomly selected from only the pool of pre-registered drivers.

The Feb. 26-28 event features the O’Reilly SUPR Late Models, Modifieds and Limited Modifieds divisions, and is one of the largest dirt track events in the country. For registration and a complete schedule, visit www.texasmotorspeedway.com/DirtTrack.

Tickets for the Texas World Dirt Track Championship are $10 for adults on Friday, $15 for adults on Saturday and $5 for children ages 12 and under both Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available by calling (817) 215-8500.
